Had a mole in my own garden yesterday. There was an old tunnel running the full length alongside the boundary wall and a couple of spurs coming off under the grass. I had dug out the full length of the main tunnel, but a mole had repaired the lot and cleaned out the other runs. I dug out two pairs of Traplines I've had for ages and hardly used due to experiencing poor results. I've had moles trapped and making it to the surface and a few times where the trap has gone off without capture. On the basis of that I wouldn't use them in a client's garden until I was sure they worked humanely and efficiently so putting them in my own job seemed like a good idea.

I opened the main run and cleaned out inside the tunnel using a spoon just as I would for a Putange. After placing the traps as per the instructions and pegging them I replaced the clod and left it overnight. Same with the second pair in the spur tunnel.

Checked them this morning and the main run trap site had been blocked with soil. As I was excavating it a mole popped up alive and kicking. Then I found it was attached to the trap having been caught by the prongs nipping its belly.........

Not good. I seem to recall someone else mentioned having moles caught by the belly skin. Back in the box for mine and I don't think they'll be out again. I'll stick to Putanges for those jobs that need a small trap that doesn't expand on capture. Clean kill every time.

Please feel free to slate for the stupid questions that are coming.

Even though I have never trapped a mole in my life, through reading this forum I have a vague idea how it works. These traps are designed to catch moles in America. Is there a difference in size between the American mole run and the British one? Or indeed is there a difference in the size of the mole? Or could they be more effective on a fresh run as opposed to a well worn run?

Just asking :D

There is a difference in size between the European mole and its American cousin. Trapline sell traps designed for each species and it is the larger ones for the European mole that I have used.

Bad business that mate. Same thing happened to me – went right off them after that.

Not a stupid question at all. I've been asked a lot worse.

Tiercel's question about different species of moles and their sizes prompted me to have another look at the Traplines I've got. They were bought off ebay from States with the stipulation that they were for the European mole. I'd just taken it for granted that the traps I received were the right ones. Having just examined them properly there is no way that the arc of the trapping wires would encompass a mole. No way. I can now see why I and others have been getting captures where the prongs have nipped the body.

I'd be grateful if somebody who is having good results with them could measure across the trapping prongs \and let me know what that is please?

i dont catch many moles and prefer a tunnel to trapline but mine catch all right. had 1 back filled once but other than that they seem to have caught well.
