Aussie Steve 0
G'day fellas, Just wondering how young everyone starts there hounds? Cheers EDIT** I realise that over in the UK (which I assume most on here are from) you have issues with laws and such. Over here in Australia it's a bit more lenient. Was thinking if a fox was to bite a hound to young it could be a deal breaker for the hound wanting to sniff them out again. I've had it happen with sight hounds and terriers over here Edited April 30, 2015 by Aussie Steve Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
Traditionally on this side of the world pups are born in the Summer and hunting is carried out late Summer 'till late Winter / early Spring. A pup does not hunt in it's first Winter and will be entered in the following season which means most hounds are entered at between 13 and 16 months. It's nothing to do with the law and such but is common sense. Edited April 30, 2015 by neil cooney 1 Quote Link to post
Aussie Steve 0
yeah thats the same over here for our fox season to mate. by 13-16months old they would be pretty much fully developed physically, how about mentally? are they slow to mature? Quote Link to post
franatic 54
It all depends on certain lines, some can be slow to tune in and some very quick and sharp to tune in. The trouble with some of sharp ones is they can get very clever early on in their hunting career. Alot of the ones that were slow and backward can often turn out to be very good hounds after a season or two and end up hunting into their twilight years. 1 Quote Link to post
