chisler 90
Love the bows. Is the process hard? I have a good supply of yew, in particular I have found a lovely, long, straight knot free piece about 7 inches in diameter for a good 6 foot. Really want to try to make a bow out of it. Does it sound feasible? 7" dia is a good size, if you quarter it then you will have 4- 72" staves - 4 bows- or 4 attempts to make 1 bow, go for it .
Hydropotesinermis 724
Awesome!! I was thinking I'd experiment with something like Hazel before I started chopping away at my piece of Yew, are there any books or guides you can recommend?
chisler 90
very good idea, you have more chance of success starting off with a laminated bow, I will have a look in my loft I'm sure I still have a little booklet that I used to get started with, if I find it I would be pleased to post it off to you.

Hydropotesinermis 724
Amazing. This may be a silly question but is it better to work green wood or seasoned? I have some yew that is standing dead because of bark stripping, may be 10 years old. It is seasoned and as hard as iron. I turn bowls out of it so its very stable. chisler 90
All the bows I've carved have been from well seasoned wood, the longer the better, truer the final bow curve will be. from what I read yew staves where cut and seasoned for 6 years before shaping,
