Well my heads all in a mess at the moment trying to figure out what birds I want to keep in my avairy. I have spoke to my daughter and explaind to her that having more than brite coloured birds in a mixed avairy is going to be hard due to colour feeding and she's fine with it

So sofar we've decide on acouple of birds but I'm not sure if they will be ok together so I'll tell you lads what we've decided and would like some advice on if they will be ok together..

So here goes

4 hen canaries (same type )

2 cocks (1 canarie 1 goldfinch )

1pair of zebra finch

3 painted button quail

The avairy is 6 x 6 by 6 and half feet tall ..so will these birds be ok together? To many in too little space? Or maybe fit acouple more hens in???

Cheers

What you wantto think about FIRST when thinking of breeding birds is where are the youngsters you breed going to live?,with 4 hens you have the possibility of having 3-5 broods with 3-6 chicks in them and that's 30 extra birds that will have to live in there with the original parents as well and that is far to many mate.I have flights and aviaries and i've left a 6x3 empty and have made sure there's room for few more in my mule flight and i'm only breeding 3 pairs and 2 trio's of natives. Also mate be patient as this time of year most good birds are being kept and will being bred from and a lot of birds for sale will be problem birds of some sort or old and maybe beyond worth,so just be carefull and try not to rush into buying the first you see,if your still stuck at the end of the sason i'll happily gift you some greenfinches to get you started for next year but good luck in your search.. :victory:

Cheers for that fireman. and I have resisted temptation to go out and buy strait away lol there were some for sale in Birmingham but the picture of the amount of birds in the size of cage and the amount of shit on the cage floor put me off lol if I have to wait for a while then that's what I'll have to do'..... And looks like I'm going av start mocking another svairy up for youngsters lol

Well yesterday was quiet a good day.was speaking to mate who I havnt seen in couple month and told him about my avairy that I've built and my search for the ever elusive Canary (lol) turns out his neighbour breeds and shows canarys and had all flights and bird shed/room in the back yard.i asked him to ask his neighbour if by any chance he could put me in touch with some one who I could purchase some birds off...well acouple hour laters got a phone call saying that the old fellow has asked if I wanted to nip up to have a chat about what type of canarys I was after and what I was intending to do with them. I arranged to turn up at 9 this morning to see the fellow when I got there he was waiting in the front garden for me..IGot to chatting and told him I was after some canarys for the little un to put in an aviary he invited me round the back yard where half his garden was flights for pairs and a mixed avairy and at the bottom a shed full of breeding cages and more rosettes than I could count we sat chatting for a bit and then he gave me two pairs for free. I did offer to buy them but he wouldn't have any of it he said we all have to start somewhere and it's nice to have a helping hand...proper salt of the earth old type fellow

  • 2 weeks later...

Lovely canaries there.

dont bother with the painted quail as they are thick as shit and always in the way or flying at the walls trying to kill themselves.

on the quail front I would get bobtails, californians or cortunix.

cortunix are easier and you can get some nice colours, italian bibbed are nice, whites or chocolates. They also will lay an egg each a day, sometimes 2 and the eggs are of a size that you can eat

I know a guy who started his whole Stud with 4 totally unrelated Birds, paired them up the first year and had 27 young and then swapped and changed and paired things up again, including unflighted and had close to 50! He can still keep going, breeding without inbreeding, you don't need a lot to get going. Surplus stock pays for feed and ancillaries. A new Hen or Cock will keep him going for several years more. Like someone said you need to plan for future stock.

I better add they are Canaries.
