Truther 1,579
Its all i do now mate, i can take a fair bit of game working in a team with the dogs, and you're not limited to ground game, nice mixed bags on a regular basis Quote Link to post
leethedog 3,071
I'd like a go at it but the russell I use to Bush you can shoot a shotgun over but get a catie out and he runs for the motor I think he has been watching me practice lol 4 Quote Link to post
krawnden 1,036
I'd love to give this a go but my skill with a catty would need to improve fairly dramatically - most stuff you'd get a shot at would be moving at speed I would imagine. Only exception is likely to be squirrels which would probably give you a chance when they pause about 10 12 ft up a tree, which they often seem to do. 1 Quote Link to post

You have to put the work in with the dogs, you don't want a busher that's a maniac, smashing the cover really hard or all you'll get is running shots, not very productive, even if you're a decent shot with a catty, low brambles and a fairly steady dog is the way to go, i get most of my rabbits that way. My busher is specially trained for the squirrel job, most dogs of any kind will hunt squirrels in a fashion, but she's in a league of her own, like the squirrel treeing dogs the Yanks use, but even better from what iv'e seen on the vids. Catty hunting is about knowing what you're doing rather than being a fantastic shot, making better chances for yourself will fill the bag better than "trick shooting" 1 Quote Link to post
krawnden 1,036
Truther - I'm intrigued by you saying your busher's specially trained for the squirrel job. Excuse my ignorance but what does she do? Quote Link to post
Truther 1,579
She systematically works a wood and finds the squirrels, she marks the trees, she works by scent and sight, she just homes in on them and don't miss much, gets me lots of chances. Iv'e done it that much with her i can read her reactions like a book, it would be very hard for any dog iv'e ever seen to beat her on squirrels, no BS mate, she's unreal lol. Quote Link to post

Saw it in Warrener dvd can't imagine it being easy tho As a youngster i was out and about with various bushing jukels, some better than others,in attendance where a couple of old lads with their home made catapults. What i learnt from an early age is anything flushed out of cover was better covered by a gun or a lurcher. neems 2,406
i wouldnt risk accidents by going for rabbits or anything the dogs on,but never really thought about taking one for squirrels etc Quote Link to post
Truther 1,579
Maybe you should give it a go Neems, adds a new dimension to bushing just rabbits on a slow day. Pheasants are daytime, i don't roost shoot. 5 Quote Link to post
marshman 7,757
I know a few lads that bush and use cattys and like Truther says it defo adds a different dimension to their bag at the end of the day. 1 Quote Link to post

I have been debating getting a catty, it can fit in a pocket and will add a bit to woodland wander in the summer. But I had to remember the realities of my catapult hunting as a 10-12 year old, I think one roosting pigeon and a LOT of missed shots. Quote Link to post
