shropshire mole 190
So how far do you/would you travel for work? I ask, as I will stay within a max 20 mile radius of home, any further and find it hard to make it pay. Sods law, tends to dictate, that when I have either finished or nearly finished a job, another comes in near by!. Why cant they all come in together, so I can do several jobs at same time in same area Quote Link to post
Nicepix 5,650
I usually work within 60km of home, but have gone out 90km. If I can I arrange to work one area one week and another area another week so the distance between jobs isn't as far. Next week I've got two of my four jobs within 10km of each other and the third is on the way to the fourth so I'm in front. Last week a really good client needed an urgent job doing that put an extra 240km on my van as I was working the opposite side of the area. Swings and roundabouts. Quote Link to post
mole trapper 1,693
Well, to put it into context, I bought the new van five weeks next Tuesday, just finished now and looking at the odometer I've done 7,200 miles in that time. I cover most of Cornwall six/seven days a week, admitted I also do about twelve nights a month on rabbit contracts too which adds up the miles. I'm not fussed if I do two jobs in a day that are seventy miles apart, it will still pay well. However, I never only have two jobs a day so there will always be stuff to do both ways as well. My diesel bill last tax year was just shy of ten grand, when the year just ended accounts are added up I will definitely have topped that amount as I'm doing way more miles now. China's carbon footprint is tiny in comparison to mine. Edited April 18, 2015 by mole trapper 2 Quote Link to post
shropshire mole 190
MT - Thats hard core stuff, thought my part time 6500 miles a year was enough, you do that in weeks, lol I guess as long as it pays in the long run, its worth it. You can hang up your traps soon atb Quote Link to post
mole trapper 1,693
Haha, not yet! Trying to build the business as big as I can to get the best price possible when I come to sell it. Even then I'll hopefully still be trapping, but not in Devon and Cornwall anymore, and in a more relaxed manner, rather like another esteemed mole trapper on here! Not mentioning any names, ahem! 2 Quote Link to post

Bossie 90
I'm a parttime (pro) rabbit catcher. Most of my work requires a 150-180mile drive. One way that is! Quote Link to post

Mole Catching is quite specialized and takes years of experience.Mole work only accounts for about 25_35% of my turnover, the rest is rabbit work, black box contracts and general pest control. So yes the business is very desirable as I've got my eggs in many baskets. Phil Lloyd 10,738
You will definitely be able to sell the business... Several years, before I went on 'the moles' ,.I had a thriving Pest control business,...dozens of Contracts,... I became jaded (bored to fecking death actualy ) with the 'rats, mice and crawling insects',...so, I sold off ALL my contracts. Close pals all told me that I was mad,.that I would starve without that guaranteed income,.but I didn't... There is something to be said for making a change..... All the best, Phil. 2 Quote Link to post
mole trapper 1,693
Absolutely agree, trouble is I'm still enjoying chasing the quid at the moment. The rare occasions the phone goes a bit quiet I think right that's it I'm selling up, then the work goes mad again and I'm like a dog with three dicks. A local business man offered me 75k back around Christmas and I told him to come back with a serious offer and I would consider it. According to my accountant the general rule of thumb as a one man band is two and a half times your annual net profit as a starting point. Quote Link to post
shropshire mole 190
