Sounds painful! I would get a cramp/spasm also on the left but on the inside of the thigh, god it kills - I'd say it lasts about 5minutes then eases.

I've no clue what causes mine or yours but I put a hot water bottle on it if it's real bad (not on bare skin) it works sometimes but not always.

Wish I could shed some light on yours as I know how bloody sore it is!

Oh and if I get this similar then rest assured it's not just cause your age (hopefully) :)

Just done a quick search there - your wife was right on pressing the foot down

Anyway found this hopefully link works it gives tips on preventing it and relieving it also. Seems your garden antics may well have caused it. Here you go and good luck lol.

Probably just overexertion....if you dont get enough fluids into you a touch of dehydration on an overexerted muscle will lead to an electrolyte imbalance and bang theres your cramp.......wouldnt worry about it mate if its just the odd time...........if it starts getting regular though might be worth getting your cholesterol checked.

When I get cramp it tends to be in my calf muscles in bed. I either stretch my leg out straight or quickly get up and stand up before I wake everyone else up swearing.

Stretching the muscles out seems to get rid of it.
