Scary Times

Walking through Browndown near Lee-on-the-Solent with Skye, my old collie x whippet, and I saw a chap popping out from some bushes. I thought nothing of it at first until, about thirty seconds later, another chap came out from the same bushes looking very apprehensive. Me being a complete innocent to the ways of the world in my early twenties assumed they were bird watching and had found a nest so I waited until they both disappeared and went to have a look...I found two pieces of rope tied to two branches around six foot from the ground and about five foot apart! Being a bit naïve it took a few moments for me to work out why they were there. I gave up rabbiting on Browndown for a while! :icon_eek:

:laugh: I found a piss head up there a week ago. 11pm at night. Dogs took off towards the noise, I followed and found a pissed up guy rolling round having trouble navigating the wood. Gutted was an under statement. Thought my luck was in.

I used to find the shore side of Browndown so infuriating; all those rabbits but the crunch of pebbles underfoot always spooked them and the little collie x whippet always came back with nothing. Even worse when I kept bumping into little old ladies with lapdogs complaining about how their "little darlings" kept catching the "poor bunnies." I'd give a lot for a spot like that now though (to bring the kelpie on) as all the rabbits have vanished from where I am now over the last few years so he only sees squirrels and pheasant...and they're illegal.

Apologies for veering off topic...just felt a bit nostalgic.

After l'd been out lamping, walking back along the canal with the dog, shined my torch on a pile of old clothes floating a few feet from bank-

then saw all this long, straggly grey hair and realised it was dead old woman face down in the water. Bit of a shock to put it mildly

Did the plod say anything about you having a lamp and dog with you when they turned up DJ? Lol. On a serious note though I wouldn't fancy coming across anything like that, sounds like quite a few do though.

Jukel123: I was never certain but that's what I've always assumed. I've since heard it was a regular haunt for "that kind of thing."

The other "almost" scary thing I remember was when I used to spend a lot of time looking for birds' nests in my teens and spent a lot of time in and around Lee on the Solent golf course. On the side of the road there was a black bin bag and I nearly looked in it but decided not to...a few days later there was a news item on the local news about a paperboy finding a dead baby there! Moving on about twenty years and I was walking the dogs near Kingston cemetery in Portsmouth early one morning on bin day when I heard a strange murmering sound coming from a bin bag. Thinking back to the incident in my teens I decided to investigate...and found a child's broken toy with an almost dead battery. :icon_eek:
