Lurcher Feeding In The Past

Recommended Posts

thanks lads for all your comments, the one about the old colliexgreys, rings true,an old boy i knew who came of old farming stock, and used this type of lurcher, during the 50ths and 60ths,day and night, worked the strain hard becausetimes were hard, those dogs did him proud he managed to buy a small croft with the money he made from hunting, granted there were loads of rabbits abut then, and the croft cost about 300 pounds, hard man and hard dogs, this is genuine,he died acouple of years ago aged 87 yrs,but always had a lurcher about the place.

What was the working life expectancy of working lurchers in years gone by?

Even with the numbers, how hard was the graft, when there were rabbits everywhere and they were not hunted as much?

And. . . . are you presuming, that the dogs of those who advocate good feeding, do not see as much game as they dogs of days gone by?

from what I understaneed kibble is basically poison for dogs and since it became the staple diet dogs life expectancy also declined. Too much grains, protein and the cooking process makes it basically indigestible for dogs. I have researched the barf (bones and raw food) diet and it makes a lot of sense to me.

years ago lurchers and lurchermen like the old time warreners, caught hundreds of rabbits day night,to make a meagre living, the dogs were worked hard and treated as true working animals.and basically ate what they caught and were fed scraps, why is it nowadays that every body advocates feeding high protein dry, every supplement going, and alot of dogs willnever see or work enough rabbitsto justify this type of feeding, the old lurchermen never had the money or acess to this type of feed, so how did these dogs do the work they did

The old time warreners dogs would have been a far cry of a modern day lurcher mate. More like collie heavy collie x's I would think. The dog's wouldn't have worked like we know it. No lamping little coursing. They would have done lot of net work etc. But no 30's n 40's a night.Bet the poor feckers had a hard life though. They wouldn't have been the performance dogs we keep today. 1st class diet then would be mediocre diet today be it dog, horse or fowl. Look at old keeps for dogs n fowl and that tells the tale. atb.

Cant go that far back, but in the 60s, I knew all the Lurcher owners, and a few Greyhound Lads from my town,

there was a Knackery that sold cooked Beef for dog food, they all bought this, and Sheep heids from the Butcher it was always mixed with brown bread, never complete, and most added SA50 supplement, the Lurcher Lads would also boil up Rabbit and Hare, the big difference to now, I never saw anybody feed raw, it was always cooked.
