New Little Springer

Evening all,

 

Ive had a little taster of shooting up in the father in laws field last weekend (completely destroying a road work sign hung on a cone), and decided to treat myself to my own gun.

Im picking up a HW99s for a fair price after doing ALOT of research. I hope this is the right choice as my original choice was a PCP.

 

Ive ordered targets, a gun slip, trigger lock, pellets etc but what i wanted to know is how to clean it.

 

Obviously it will be target shooting but still, ill be in the lovely muddy fields. How often and what do i use? just wipe the stock or also clean the barrel and how?

Nice light guns , give it a wipe over with a cloth sprayed with something like Napier gun spray http://www.napieruk.com/acatalog/Oils__Cleaners_Etc.html

Clean the barrel before first use, it'll be full of factory grease to prevent rust -- if you don't, you'll get dieselling (loud bang plus smoke) which can damage the rifle.

 

Squirt Ballistol (or similar) down the barrel from the breech until it drips out of the muzzle. Leave it to work for a few minutes. Then pull some patches through from breech to muzzle. You can buy kits for this, but being a cheap barsteward, I use a length of plastic strimmer wire, crimped in the middle. Push the pull-through in from the muzzle, place a 2cm-square patch of cut-up T-shirt in the crimp, spray with Ballistol, pull through. Repeat with fresh patches until they come out clean. Then repeat with a dry patch or two to remove any remaining oil -- if you don't, you'll get dieselling again.

 

You may have to cock the rifle to do all this. If you do, remember never to dry-fire a springer (i.e. don't ever fire it when there's no pellet in the breech). Dry-firing will damage the piston seal and spring.

 

After each shooting session, wipe down the action with a rag dampened with Ballistol to prevent rust. Wipe down the stock as well if it's muddy.

And then when you have done all that and are enjoying your hw99 get it tuned, and you will have one of the most accurate little rifles on the market

Thanks for the replies! Picked her up earlier and had a little play I the garden, I'm happy with my choice. I've already been looking at xs Titan springs

I had some 3in1 so dabbed a bit of that on a cloth. Such a lovely little rifle

Hi Sparky the HW99 is a nice little rifle and i must admit you cant go far wrong no matter what HW you buy, happy shooting.

Before you go whacking new springs and seals and stuff like that ask yourself does it need it?

Have you got a chrono with which to check power when you are done?

 

 

The answer to both the above is probably no!

 

Just stripping the rifle down, making sure there are no sharp edges and burrs, polishing, relubing can make a hell of a difference to a spring powered gun! You may find you do not even need the new spring after that.

 

Just changing the ammunition can bring an increase in power and accuracy. Play with these things and buy a chrono before going deeper into the dark arts of tuning!

You're probably right secretagentmole, one step at a time. Since my last post, today is the first time I get to take her out again. I'll see how I get on and then most likely take her apart later on
