Can't comment on racing, but I had a lurcher sired by a top whip grey scratch racer. He was the fastest dog off the line on any ground/situation I've had. That's over salukis, saluki lurcher and a lurcher x lurcher with sal in. So the real thing would obviously smoke anything, like has been said just for a while though..

Whippets and greyhounds are handicapped on 16 yards per second.

So can I see if Ive got this straight coursing bred dogs are faster than Whippets if the Whippet is up to its chest in slop but in a fair race say over a 100 yards on decent ground the Whippet will beat the saluki, now if thats right lets keep this thread on track ( excuse the pun )and about Whippet types, Im sure theres enough saluki threads the owners of this type could infest

This bitch from the 70’s, Daisy, sired by a ped whippet to a greyhound dam, (Bilko x Frozen Kill) is, in my mind , the greatest non-ped ever.

I saw it beat a coursing bred , two out of two , quite easily, but then that was it, it wouldn’t have got near a third hare.

Its litter brother, Robbo, could also easily stop a hare, but again, didn’t have the stamina to run more than two.

I ran non-peds on all types of ground and they had the initial speed, but once again, not the stamina to run more than a couple, hence why I moved on to lurchers and Salukis, so, I’m not knocking the coursing bred , just speaking from personal experience, so I’ll say, for the last time, a non-ped, in MY EXPERIENCE, will beat a coursing bred over a sprint distance.

a non ped can run winter arable in a fashion mate but it doesn’t run nowhere close to what it would n dry grass

exactly mate and it would be even less over 450 meters wouldnt it because the grey ain’t keeping its pace up that long and that’s against a pet pure saluki not a coursing bred

i’m replying to gl if you look back 

a coursing bred smokes a whippet on arable we’re in the uk it rains your out a few times a week so need something that runs wet ground ffs lol it’s not rocket science lol

I’m not sure what you mean ? If the saluki was four seconds slower than the greyhound, that’s a distance! The saluki would have just been on the third bend when the greyhound was crossing the finish line !

If coursing breeds were faster than whippets and greyhounds , people would be racing coursing breeds, there would be no whippet and greyhound tracks.

Whippet and greyhound are used as base breeds for lurchers to add speed, saluki to add stamina and staying power.

Weve been round and round this so many times, it’s getting repetitive, so I’ll bow out gracefully! LOL !

a greyhound may run 16 yards a second handicap over 100 meter it won’t over 450 meters mate lol 

side note if i put a whippet over my bitch the pups wouldn’t have more speed lol or id a done it a long time ago like when i’ve had half saluki greys that are slower then me coursing bred lol

They are timed and handicapped over the distance they run !

There are fast starters and fast finishers, slow starters and slow finishers ,it averages 16 yards per second. 
We’ve been through all this before. You take the time your scratch dog, (the fastest), does then the slower dog gets 1 yard start for every 6/100 hundreds of a second slower it is, which equates to 16 yards per second

If the fastest whippet does 8 seconds for 150 yards and a slower one does 9 seconds  it gets 16 yards start.

If the fastest greyhound does 27 seconds for 480 yards and a slower one does 28 seconds, it gets 16 yards start.

A good handicapper will watch the dogs and give a lift or a pull in it’s handicap to try and ensure the race is a dead heat, but the starting point is 16 yards per second. 
I’ve handicapped whippets and greyhounds and normally got it right, but a good owner knows how to stop and start a dog to get an advantage over the handicapper, but I’ve seen and did enough to know that a coursing bred isn’t faster than a non-ped whippet over 150 yards or a greyhound over 480 yards. Please don’t say “ what about winter arable”, I’m just stating facts, not engaging in “what aboutery” ! LOL !

Try dividing 480 by 27 and you get 17 yards per second…….Which is even faster than when I used to handicap .

So now you’re telling a handicapper how to handicap ?

No, I knew instantly that you got your maths the wrong way round.

It was 50 years ago when I was handicapping and whippets and greyhounds have got faster in that time, so if I was to do it now, I’d handicap at 17 yards per second rather than 16 yards per second as I used to.

Now you can get on with the homework I sent you and also write 100 times “ I must not contradict on something I know nothing about” !
