Hopefully these few old pictures and some of recollections from my early teens (the late 1950’s and early 1960’s) may be of some interest. They’re all old style “rag whippets” and pre date the require

22 not my type couldn’t run under rules  my lad 20 not many about these days  worlds got bigger lol

22” was big for even non-peds back when I was racing. Clubs had a 21” limit and the BWRA had a 32lb limit.

Now if they fit in the trap they can race at the clubs and the BWRA still has a 32lb weight limit for the Racing Champions but a 55lb ( ! ) limit for Scratch Championships.

Cheers.

The American KC has always had a 22" limit, but to be honest, I think 18" for pedigree  bitches and 20" for dogs is good.

Cheers.

When the BWRA proposed raising the limit to 55lb I was very vocal,in my objection.

I told them there was smaller Greyhound won the Waterloo Cup !

They banned me from their forum.

To be fair, the limit stayed at 32lb for their Racing Championships, but there was a lot of litter wastage with dog pups from Greyhound influenced litters so they raised the limit for Scratch Racing.

25", 50lb scratch dogs look just like pure greyhounds and are probably faster, Great to watch but stretching the term "whippet" somewhat !

Cheers.

Good little book on racing.

I've got that book aswell.

Met Pauline when I was at an open whippet racing event at Highgate Greyhound stadium late 60's, she was from Pudsey in Yorkshire, a big whippet area back then. I think she was instrumental in forming the BWRA.

Cheers.
