Have I Made A Mistake ?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys.

I've just ordered a AA S400 Superlite carbine. This is going to be my first PCP (although I've been shooting in varios formats for the past 20 year's) I ordered this rifle for a few reasons, such as cost and the smaller size and lighter weight will make it more practical for me to bring my daugher into the world of shooting sports (she's 4 and ) whilst still being of a size that I should be able to comforably shoot it.

My question though is even after reading some reviews which say that its a fairly good rifle when looking through various forums and looking at people asking for PCP reccomendations the S400 dosent seem to be particually high on the list. Is there a reson for this ? or is it going to be up to the task of a bit of bunny bashing and maybe some HFT ?

Cheers

Graham

s 400 has to be a top pcp .if you dont want a single shot and a gun with a mag then you have a problem .I guess you new the s 400 is a single shot gun so not a problem .s400 has to be the best value for money pcp a little more expensive than some but very good quality .

Hi Graham

The gun you have chosen is certainly not a mistake. The S410 and S400 are, I think I'm right in saying, the biggest selling PCPs of all time. Not only that, most on here have one, have had one, or know someone who has. I've never heard a truly bad report. Of course you can buy the odd lemon, but I rarely hear it for the best makes.

For my money the AAs and HWs are the two top makes, better made than the rest, but I am sure people here have different views.

The thing is, the 400 / 410 series has been with us for a long time now and other newer models are getting all the attention. Nothing wrong with that, but it does not make the older guns worse. They are still just as good as they always were. Some people on here are using HW77s and HW80s for rabbits, no problem at all, but when was the last time you saw them being discussed in the mags? If its a formula that works, that's all you need and you've certainly got that

Hi Graham, you have made a very sound choice. I have used an S410 for six years now, never let me down and is a rabbit thumper in .22, that 400 action has stood the test of time. It is really good quality, proven and very well made. Lots of folk swear by Air Arms. Ok there are a few niggles, the trigger safety, the none flush magazine, but generally it is a lovely rifle.

If you do need any add ons, can I recommend Rowan Engineering, I fitted one of their bolt handles ( ball to ball ) it does improve the cycling somewhat. I have used Rowans ten shot magazine on a 400 as well, it is a lovely piece of kit and works faultlessly.

So, enjoy it and welcome. A good forum with some very friendly people.

My only comment would be yes they are a cracking rifle but when you pick it up from the dealer give it a damn good checking over! My first one came with a loosely fitting action (which you can't nip up yourself due to the anti tamper) and a reccuring breech seal leak as well as a barrel band that also had not been tightened up! To be fair the RFD sorted it quickly but its worth checking, the s410 I upgraded to as a result has performed almost as faultlessly as the r10 it shares the cabinet with. Its been a nice enough rifle but one of them has to go to make room for an hmr and I'm afraid its going to be the air arms :( I dont know what it is but the r10 feels part of me somehow ;)

Hi Graham,

You will love the S400. I purchased my first pcp last year a secondhand 2003 S410 and it is absolutely fantastic. In the 12 months that I have owned it I have shot over 150 rabbits and have had great sessions decoying pigeons. A friend who I shoot with has a HW100 which is a great rifle but I still prefer the AA (it just looks the part), he also brings along his second rifle which is a S410 Carbine which in my opinion is a fantastic piece of kit to use in confined spaces such as when hide shooting.

Just zeroed up my S410 now the evenings are getting lighter and the ferreting season is over. It hadn't been used in the past three months yet it still had kept its full charge and was spot on putting each ten shot mag into a touching group at 25yds from the bench.

You and your daughter will have a great time using the S400.

You must of liked it at the time to buy it ?> why have doubts about it now ? once they get into your head they might affect your shooting but why does a review in a magazine bother you . get out there use the gun and do your own review

I spent ages toying around once with a HW100 that I used to own due to doubts that I had with it.

Due to a few bad reviews I read about its weight online and obsessing about pellet groupings I lost confidence with the rifle as it was.

I changed the cylinder to a A&M lightweight, swapped scopes around every other week, cleaned it obsessively, stripped it, change pellet brands etc etc.............

End result gun sold and replaced!

So try not to let any silly little doubts you have make you have a expensive experiance like I had.
