mole trapper 1,693
I know I'll miss it when it finishes, but Will be so pleased to put the madness of mole season behind me, it's now reaching its crescendo down here, loads of doubles now and the phones red hot. I predict "famous last words" it'll go quiet round here by mid may at latest way it's looking at the mo. 1 Quote Link to post
Nicepix 5,650
I was trapping all through the summer last year. It never let up. Quote Link to post
mole trapper 1,693
God, I hope not! Maybe just a little spat around July and then no more till November will suit me nicely. Whatever happens though, 20th of May the answephone goes on, and I'm over in France till at least 10th June. 1 Quote Link to post

If you have an address in France to deliver to check out this website: http://www.gardencour.fr/piegeage_taupe_193.htm The Lucifer brand of trap is one of the types I've been using and they are OK. In Gamme Vert they range from €3.95 a pair to over €6 for exactly the same product. Bonne vacances 1 Quote Link to post
mole trapper 1,693
In order of appearance, Where would you like me to start "I am a complete francophile" Bet I feckin won't, lol, were over for Mel's birthday, our anniversary and my fiftieth! Seriously, we need a break as we were too busy for the September one. Today, I think I've broken my record for most lucrative moles only day, on all day tomorrow and Monday, then start back as usual on Tuesday, oh, and of course I start back on rabbit duty on the fourteenth! Its enough to drive a man to drink! Not stopping anywhere any length of time, other than Ile de Rhe for a week, there is a gamme vert there, but like everything else on the island, it ain't cheap! Surprisingly the diesel prices on the Il de Re and Il d'Oleron are much cheaper than the mainland. Whenever we go over there I make sure the camper is on fumes as we go over the bridge then put 65 litres in at the supermarket filling station. We're going over to Oleron at the end of the month for a week. Cracking mullet fishing in the creeks and lagoons. Quote Link to post
mole trapper 1,693
Herself is trying valiantly to get me to go there before going to Rhe this time, but I'm undecided at the moment. Absolutely with regard to the diesel price, can't understand why it's cheaper though? Having not been to oleron, is the eating out good? Rhe is great, except for the overly loud plummy mouthed Brita gobbing off about their yachts and Biarritz. Quote Link to post
Nicepix 5,650
They are similar. Oleron is bigger, slightly more commercial but you can hide away too. I also go to Marans quite a bit on fishing trips. I park the camper right outside Gamme Vert on the street for a few days and wander around the canals and drains. You can catch anything from mullet to wels catfish. Quote Link to post

Nicepix 5,650
Neither of them are what you could call 'commercial' in the way that UK resorts are except for July and August. But Oleron has more villages and as such cafes and bars. The reason we prefer Oleron is that we take a dog and cat in the camper and the site there at Boyardville is perfect for us as the cat can roam about safely, there are plenty of walks for the dog, it is a few minutes walk from the beach, bars and cafes yet still quiet and secluded. Oh! and there is a river next to the camp site that holds mullet. We will be going up to Alsace for ten days in June and off to Brittany for a week or ten days in September. Last summer we drove up to the mountains at the Puy de Domes and then free wheeled 400km down the Loire Valley. For long weekends we just drive about an hour or so to the Charente Valley around the Cognac area and park up somewhere next to the river. Nobody bothers you in France. You can park virtually anywhere. The only places that I would avoid as being too commercial are around the St Nazaire - La Baule areas. Quote Link to post

Yes stopped there once, won't be going back, bit like Biarritz but less glitz. We will be heading down to Alsace first, never been this time of year, usually do that region in September. We'll almost definitely head across to Arle from there then up to Orleone/Rhe. With us nothing is ever fixed though, we always travel with the two dogs, so same as yourself look for more suitable places. Another place we often end up in is Lauzerte, we used to go there each year on the motor bikes back twenty years ago, it was fantastic, really good local hospitality, food and wine and it was just as if the Germans had left five minutes before. Then it got put on the map in the late nineties and got tarted up, now it's a shadow of its former self. Booked the chunnel tickets last night, that's gone up ! £240 return this time, but small change for getting back over for a few weeks of r+r. Quote Link to post
Nicepix 5,650
How are you travelling - camper van or caravan? We have a camper and use this site to plan the stop overs: http://en.airecampingcar.com/index.php It's not perfect. You have to check the reviews and do a bit of research, but it is a good resource to start with. There are loads of free and cheap aires to stop over at. The camper van site on Oleron we stayed at is just outside Boyardville, just the other side of the small bridge. Plenty of room for the dogs to run about and only a few minutes walk from the amenities. If you are travelling down the Loire I have a list of sites from Sully sur Loire down to the coast that we stayed on last year that I could let you have. Quote Link to post
