Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Who made up the term family ,what is that ,dog ,bitch ,three pups and grand dam annex.A group of the same is a type. I agree all credit remains with original breeder until the recipe is changed then all credit goes to he who maintains a line or better still improves it .All lines start with a type whether related or not ,the aim being to combine the best qualities of both to produce producers of the same .When these producers are arrived at its time to call it a line .The quick fix is to turn back in ,those with patience however will breed the best to the best and accept no other . 5 Quote Link to post
yorkshire 151
same thing but different way of putting it isn't it? line, strain, family? Another question is when does a man call a 'line' his own?????? After 1 litter? After 5 generations? If ever at all? When the man wants fame , fortune , or both , normally lol 3 Quote Link to post
the goat 642
Sadly that's very true. Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,100
So cynical lads .Perhaps just maybe there are some that want nothing more than to help others and guide them along the way . 3 Quote Link to post
steve t 931
so if a few mates have brothers sisters mothers uncles etc and breed from the best from them and keep going for a few generations they'll eventually start throwing similar types and this then is a recognisable line? Squirrel_Basher 17,100
To me and i stress only my opinion ,a line is nothing unless the outcome of a mating is predictable .Haphazard turning in just because they are related will be the ruination mate .Not every dog and bitch related will produce the same when mated .Trial and error to begin with is what matters until you hit on what works .Simliar comes from repeat matings .Once these are produced ,put back to original stud and your off .Breed enough to sort through to start with but avoid mass production as things move on ,will only lead to it getting out of hand and untried stock used in matings .Look to the future not just the here and now .Cull whats not your ideal ,harsh but necessary . 2 Quote Link to post
foxbolter 447
you could own too different lines mate them and its still your line 1 Quote Link to post

Glyn..... 5,208
in my opinion your on the right track, get ready for a lot of disappointments, like terriers not being good enough to breed from, losing that real good one , dogs you've farmed out to others not available for all the reasons under the sun , don't try and do it all on your own it can't be done .....most important thing don't lie to yourself edited to say are your base stock line bred from different lines or breeding unknown ? also don't go culling healthy pups you my regret it , edited again to say putting Joe over this daughter and then his daughter/ grand daughter, will give you no/little flexibility and force you to use new blood , which then will undo your inbreeding, if you where to produce a half brothers/sisters to pup A and then breeding them , it will give your breeding plan longevity Edited April 2, 2015 by Glyn..... 6 Quote Link to post

Zilverhaze 1,627
i think the hardest part is going to be finding the right people to go forwards with 3 Quote Link to post
Glyn..... 5,208
i would go back to the person who has been line breeding them and ask for some advise he may well know of a dog bred like buster work like buster and throws pups like buster , you have to ask yourself are you trying to take a line forward or are you trying to reinvent the wheel try and find some books on breeding animals for propose i'll read any thing to do with stock breeding be it cattle to fowl to pit dogs Edited April 2, 2015 by Glyn..... 3 Quote Link to post
marshman 7,757
Zilverhaze or you could go down Foxbolters much simpler route of getting two different lines breeding them together and then just saying its your line lol 1 Quote Link to post
