steve t 932
a comment glen made in a recent post got me wondering whats the difference between a line and a family and when does a family become a line 1 Quote Link to post
the goat 642
same thing but different way of putting it isn't it? line, strain, family? Another question is when does a man call a 'line' his own?????? After 1 litter? After 5 generations? If ever at all? 4 Quote Link to post
AXUM 255
i think line is after a dog and family is after breeder. Quote Link to post
j1985 1,984
If a man breed 5 or 6 generations from one mans stock does that make them dogs his line or the bloke he got his foundation dogs off ???? Lol Quote Link to post
the goat 642
i think line is after a dog and family is after breeder. is that a straight line or a bendy 1 Quote Link to post
Chid 6,542
Imo a line is when the dogs have been line bred and family is when dogs have been bred to the same type but not line bred Quote Link to post
the goat 642
Line bred for how long? Quote Link to post
the goat 642
If your not breeding to the same type is that then outcrossing? And what do you mean same type? Just curious myself iv never line bred but would obviously like to do so when I think the time will be right. Quote Link to post
leethedog 3,071
Hello it's the newbie again isn't line bred. Bred to same blood line and family just bred from same type am I right Quote Link to post
Chid 6,542
Same type as in patterdale x patterdale .. Length of time to create a line Imo would be 5 or 6 generations but that's just my take on it .. Quote Link to post
the goat 642
don't think I'd fancy breeding anything else other than PatterdaleS, and definitely not crossing two different breeds. But surely if a dog has been bred to something related I.E half brother half sister mating, then somehow folded back in with something from the same family, then carried on... isn't that line breeding, or starting / trying to line breed? I know some people who would breed 5 generations in quite a short time, but others who could take years and years to get through 5 generations 2 Quote Link to post
matt1979 766
Am i not right in thinking alot of pedigree dogs if you trace them back generations are breed from very few dogs to start with, which were all related. For example, I know having a Bouvier that all these dogs can be traced back to one single stud dog and a few bitches as they were nearly wiped out after WW1, surely then these dogs are technicallly line breed as all dogs left were closely related or am i missing something. I am not an expert in this at all, just curious really, as it does seem a bit of a tricky question. I do know many pedigree dogs have been ruined by in breeding and it does seem a bit odd sometimes when in breeding is rightly criticized due to the health implications but line breeding (techincally the same as i see it) doesnt seem to receive the same criticism atb Quote Link to post
jigsaw 11,865
heres my line of dogs. 15 Quote Link to post
the goat 642
Family bred would be uncle /niece or something related but not out of the direct line of breeding! line breeding would be tight gradaughter/grandfather or mother/son is that your take on it or a known fact? So what would half brother half sister be? Quote Link to post
leethedog 3,071
There are a lot of my takes on it does anybody have a definitive answer on this one must someone on here who knows for sure Edited April 1, 2015 by leethedog Quote Link to post
