Popular Post socks 32,253
As some of you know we were commissioned to carry out some paid rabbiting work up in scotland ... It's a long old haul from down south but we knew there were plenty of rabbits to be caught so we boxed up 16 ferrets four dogs and off we Whent ... The views on the way up were stunning ....... We got there in the middle of a hurricane with 100mph winds and lashing rain ... We attempted to get out and do a bit but after two hours of purse nets flapping like kites longnets lifting off the floor and man and dog getting blown all over the place it was obviouse that it was impossible to do any type of hunting at all ... And that's the way it Whent for the next three days with us all battened down in the caravan we were calling home for the next two weeks ... The walls of the caravan were bending inward under the strain of the wind and we did wonder whether the thing would last lol ..... When the weather finally broke we had three days left of the first week to make some kind of dent in the rabbits so we decided to start on the big warrens first to reduce the numbers visibly ... As you can see they were some size with hundereds and hundereds of holes ... We ended up running out around 700 to a thousand yards of longnets and stop nets to cover each large warren ....... We started to get steady numbers of around 30 odd rabbits out of each warren and the ferrets and dogs were working flat out ... Very often the ferrets were off the box such was the depth of these warrens and at one stage we had ten ferrets deeper than the 16 foot the mark3 will detect to ... It was hard graft for the dogs working up and down the sandy banks pushing the rabbits to the longnets with some brilliant catches made by them ... If we had a camera man or someone to film it would have made for great viewing ... We were filling the fence steadily and at the end of the first three days ferreting we were just over the 300 mark ....... We were very lucky that a local keeper allowed us to use his blast chiller for the price of a bottle of vodka so that we could keep the rabbits fresh for a week before going off to the game dealer ..... The second week was slightly better for weather with us only missing one day and we managed five straight days ferreting resulting in over 400 rabbits in the bag ..... We forgot to count the rabbits we were feeding to the ferrets and dogs and the ones we gave away to the locals and also the rabbits the ferrets killed that we couldn't get to so I suppose we caught around the 750 ish mark all told ... Lamping was very poor and seemed that the rabbits were happily feeding out through the day with very few out at night ... One of the lads lamped his dog the first night and caught 23 and a few nights later caught around a dozen but after that it wasn't worth going out as the ground was very difficult the numbers not out and the dogs were working hard every day ..... It was a great two weeks away ... Hard graft for man and beast but a job well done with the locals extatic at the reduction of rabbits ... And we sent 711 rabbits off to the game dealer ...... The catch at the end of the second week ....... 42 Quote Link to post
