chris87 297
I have a few spots around my yard that are farley well run from rats and burrows. I bought a live catch trap last week because i want the terriers to get a taste of them anyway having no luck with the live trap yet just wondering could a stick a couple of (i tink) fenn traps on the runs in the ditch which is most active ( right behind my chickens) im sick of them and just want them gone and even a dead one will give the dogs the scent any advice appreciated cheers Quote Link to post
budharley 945
Smoke them out for the dogs mate Quote Link to post
outandabout 27
Yeah as above, smoke them out if you want the dogs to hunt them. It's illegal to catch & release them for dogs. Fenns will be effective though, or have a look at the recent snaring thread for more ideas. Good luck in getting the problem sorted mate Quote Link to post
chris87 297
Cheers lads . I was going to smoke them out next just wanted the dogs to have an idea first of whats going on. For the live trap does the trap need to be coveref in a bag or something to make it dark think i heard that before. Quote Link to post

Matt 160
Letting rats out of cages for terriers is illegal in the UK. I'm not sure what the situation is in Ireland.. Please be careful what you post on here. Quote Link to post
chris87 297
Wasent going to let it out only show the dogs then dispatch with in the law. Ment to say smell rather than taste in original post. Sorry about that .So should i cover the trap or what ? Any tips to live trapping be great . Have it set for a week and a half with peanut butter , choc spread , and i even sprinkled few oats on the butter and no joy and i wearing gloves when handeling the trap. The trap is brand new only week and half old could that be the problem that there is still scent on it Quote Link to post

Have you tried baiting with chicken food? Had a similar problem at my brother's chicken coop, only three rats though! Eventually caught them by putting trap on a run inside the pen, right beside feeder! Also removed feeder each night, and had a rat each morning after that! I covered my cage, but not sure if it's necessary! 2 Quote Link to post
The one 8,467
Takes rats a bit of time to get used to anything new and use new traps as said remove the feed supply and leave it set at night and keep at it with the fenns in tunnels 1 Quote Link to post
chris87 297
One last thing i forgot to ask when a live trap is set on a well used run how do ya know which way to face the door on the run or does it matter or does it be left off the run but right beside it. O and there is lots of food about there a yard and about 40young cattle being kept right behind me so plenty about for them to eat. Cheers for all the advise Quote Link to post
mazperks 18
Put the trap at right angles to the run, slightly to one side. You may be lucky and attract its attention with a trail of nutella/oil mix or similar. 1 Quote Link to post
Rowan 308
Rats are neophobic , wary of new objects , stick with it and good luck. 1 Quote Link to post
