bird 9,948
In my brief experience of it, the truck never left the headland, and the dog and lamp man, jumped out for the run. Just means you can cover a lot more ground, and driving round the field edge, somehow seems to spook some rabbits less, than dog and man walking it. Funnily enough, when I've done it, the slips have all been a lot longer than when on foot, as they have all been from the hedge out to where rabbit is, as opposed to walking in field and walking them up. On ground that isn't lifting with game, its a way to get 20-30 runs in front of the dog rather than 10 in the same number of hours. . . . and if there is f**k all in a 100 acre field, you don't have to walk all the way across the b*****d to get to the next one! good point jai , I walk most of the time, but I have been out in motor , and there no question about , you deff see more game in motor, how many times have walk big field that's only holding couple rabbits, it took you good 1/2 hour just get round it, where as in a motor quick look job done simple as that. and it don't matter if your poaching on foot, or in motor , there going to see a 1 million cp feckin lamp flicking about who ever you are lol . as said I go on foot and have done for 30 years it prob kept me fit in doing so lol, but I would never knock any bloke who uses a motor , why should I , I might use one me self one day .! Ideation 8,216
It's also down to the land. You couldn't drive the land round here, its a nightmare of hedges, ditches, woods, streams, fences etc etc etc. Some places, arable land, it's just massive expanses of stubble, with open gateways. . . . driving is just more efficient. Mind you every field, we always check if its been sown, and if there is no head land, we don't go on it . . . simple as. Look after the farmers, they are your friends. Simplest way to look at it, is that it's just a way to shine your lamp on more ground per night than on foot, and in some places thats what you need. Would never do it poaching though, just seems like a c*nts trick. 1 Quote Link to post

Blackdog92 2,047
About a 20 mile radious of Keswick I can go on nearly every where i want but I like it on the rough ground because it's less desirable to others who don't like going up and down fell sides a lot It keeps you fit though carrying a small hall of rabbits round your neck plus you can't beat the views when a lot of people pay a lot of money to see the same thing I see for free or get payed to do it when I go to gather the sheep down from the fells. Most feilds are 4 or 5 acre at the most so there's not much point driving round them. Luckily I don't get much problem with poachers but Probaly will now I've said it lol. fireman 10,934
I got a subaru forester and have never driven a field i wasn't ment to and i've seen some bloody good dogs get killed by running into a motor after the game had run under it ,so driving fields with dogs ain't my thing but i sure get a few looks from a few keepers when ive turned up in it and i'd rather a different motor because of it but the subaru fits my needs just nicely apart from the juice the fecker drinks and those who drive the fields regular in them must have a few quid to burn off in petrol .. dytkos 17,814
Perhaps the OP could go to the farmer and tell him that he will police the land for him? Cheers, D. Quote Link to post
bird 9,948
I lost a real good permission last year coz of illegal coursers running the land in 4x4 police involved now any time any one on that land old bill is straight there gutted realy farmers wife used to ask you to course her her dinner lovely old girl o well sign of the times I'm afraid that one thing I never really understood loosing ground like that, because if you get on with the land owner and you bell them before you go on , they know its you on there that day or night.? so to punish you like that, don't fit with me . I lost ground like that, as other farmers had complained to my farmer about the lamp, (but) I don't think he wanted the ear ache of them. now a (true) farmer one of my mates know , lets him on his ground and got 1000' acres , if other farmers moan to this farmer , he tells them there controlling foxes+ rabbits for day+ night, and he (will) have them on his ground and as long as they bell him no prob . I think today most land owners don't want running dogs on there ground in the 1st place, so just need a excuse to say no to you , pity there not many true farmers like my mate as got .
