pablo esc 1,598
Just asking if some know how high Foxes would climb around a persons garden fencing. Some people have been having a problem with the Foxes getting in and taking their chickens, day time. The was getting fed before down the road, antis. I went there a month ago and the mungrel chased a couple out near him,i nearly had one with the bullet.the land would be very vast over the back of farmland, mountain, forest. I need to go back up as the killing his birds., do the jump in and back over in the same place. ? Anyway the least i can do is try and hunt them out,and try. Quote Link to post

pablo esc 1,598
This persons fence would be at least five foot high and mesh, set outpproperly. The is no holes along the way, we found. Most of it is kind of marshy, and deer paths above Quote Link to post
rob284 1,682
Foxes can jump 6ft with ease, and if they have a wall to bounce off, even higher. 2 Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
Years ago I got a phonecall from a farmer who said he'd trapped a fox in a shed after he'd heard the commotion looked in the door and seen that all his hens were dead and the fox was still in it. I went straight away with the gun and thought all I had to do was go in and shoot the fox. Went in and no fox. The only exit was where one block had been left out for ventilation and that hole was over 7 feet up the wall. There was nothing for the fox to jump on first so it was from the ground straight out the hole. What's more there should have been 26 hens but there was 25. The fox with a hen in it's mouth had jumped through a small hole over 7 foot of the ground. Two fields away I dug a vixen with cubs, job done. I've also seen a fox clear a 8 foot high estate wall so it sounds like your friend needs a roof on his pen. 3 Quote Link to post

matt1979 766
From experience the only way to keep chickens safe is to have a good solid roof on the run they are kept in and even then old foxy will return on a regular basis to try and work out how to get at them, be it digging, jumping, climbing whatever. As already said 6ft fence is absolutely no issue for a fox and yes from my experience they usually follow a routine, if they have got in at one spot they are going to use it again. atb 1 Quote Link to post

Cargol 302
There is a 7 Ft fence around our chickens at work and last summer they lost several. I sat up one night with the night vision and watched a fox scramble up the fence with ease. And it turned out to be a half grown cub. Quote Link to post
matt1979 766
You can sort out the present culprit by various means, but until the chickens are secured, the chances are another will return at some point in the future and the process starts again. Only real way to stop the problem is to secure the chickens appropriately or except some wastage, problem is foxes dont generally take just what they need, they like to stock up so to speak. atb with sorting it out.
