hutch6 550
Hutch, that's all very traditional thinking but there's a fair bit of science now that contradicts that. Just because it's easy here's another link that addresses the low carb business and why insulin is your friend, not the enemy. http://www.muscleandstrength.com/articles/cutting-diets-low-carb "I think one of the more common misconstrued messages that seems to float around is that carbohydrates cause insulin to be released and insulin is a storage molecule so it will prevent fat loss. This is a rather close-minded way of looking that the physiology of the human body and doesn’t take into account many other factors or the bigger picture. This article will touch on the necessity of insulin in the next section." A calorie deficit is not intended to be sustained, once the fat loss goal has been achieved, the calorie intake is gradually brought back up until weight becomes static. Supplements should not make up the diet, a nutrient balanced whole food diet should make it up with supplementation used for convenience. Also, out of curiosity, why is nutrients gained from processed foods any worse than nutrients gained from the raw material? Which is what I think you are saying? I'll have to have a further read up on insulin as it goes against everything I've been told for day dot. As for processed food not containing the nutrients you need is simply that the processing removes nutrients either partially or completely. Even boiling a potato removes most of the vitamins. Alright mate, I took to this thread a bit too keenly I admit. Had a shite weekend finding a dumped saluki and having to deal with it on a Sunday evening. So I went off on a bit of a rant on this thread. Just putting across what I have learnt and used to help a few people piss the weight off which they had struggled to do with all the 'conventional' thinking. I listen very closely to the fitness pros that study the science of all this just because it interests me. But don't take my word for it, listen to them yourself. Waz 4,252
And on the other side of the coin,,to much protein can be hard on your kidneys .... Here's another interesting fact,,,,,the brain only uses energy from carbohydrates ,,in the form of glucose,, Better get some more carbs down you waz,,,,or you might end up licking windows,,lol Thats a worry Tomo, as I only got 1 kidney, I dont intend going high protein for too long, just need a quick fix, had flu a month of lingering bad chest, split up with the missus of nearly half my life, long grey winter which has all drained me so far down im sure I was insight of the bottom & until I just wrote that last bit, been feeling a lot more active & possitive. Or maybe im feeling positive coz im turning into a window licker, most of them are smiley! Edited March 16, 2015 by GD Waz

Fruit and veg contain carbs. Simple carbs in fruit. Complex carbs in bread, spuds and cereals. Fibrous carbs in root vegetables.

MoChara 1,632
So what is you average daily food in take then So what do you eat ... Tuna, boiled egg, air dried raw sausage, roasted chicken, sliced meats, them frankfurter things, beefburgers, sausages. For snacking been making sure I got whole almonds handy, or a boiled egg. A bit of fruit, Hardest thing im going without is pizza's and couscous, finishing work and going to the bakers at 4am for a baguette straight out the oven. I'd normally eat big once a day, but most of the stuff im eating is sort of convenient/snack type which im spreading out. A lot less hungry, not craving carbs which I did at the start, probably still eating wrong and too much, but am going in the right direction. Food bills gone up though. Had a dodgy ankle for a few years, lot better with loosing a stone (7kg?) and hopefully another 3 or 4 kg will follow. Need a plan for long term, my biggest problem is myself, greedy fcuker and working shifts dont help. if you don't mind me asking how long you been on the low carb for (sorry if I've missed it mentioned already)And how long before you stopped craving the carbs? I'm actually intrigued now after reading your and Kay's posts again, especially with the change in mood, feeling better etc. Maybe be worth a try?
Waz 4,252
Mo Chara, id say I started end of the 1st week in Febuary, so 6 weeks so far. Been doing press-ups, crunches, leg shit? at home and work for the last 2 weeks, been a real boost in moral, overall id say I could feel a bit of depression slipping in, but within days of starting this regime (funny enough regime is french for diet!) my outlook changed, felt like id been injected with positivity. Or, my brains not working aswell like TOMO says Edited March 16, 2015 by GD Waz

hutch6 550
I'll try and find the lecture for you but it is delivered by a leading scientist in nutrition and he goes on about the effect of wheat on the brain and it is very similar to opiates. Various tests on schizophrenics were run int he 70's on UK patients where they dropped wheat from the diet of the patients then the behavioral episodes diminished. Then two weeks later they brought wheat back into the diet and the behavioral episodes returned almost immediately I think. (video 18:20). It's worth watching just for that let alone all of the other information it gives you.

I've been munching wild at night this past few months and weird thing is I've felt like crap - didn't click till I re-read the posts about mood/diet. I went from 'I like pasta too much' -to- " maybe worth a try" Proves reading things twice is helpful
noddy10 411
Is that right your body can only absorb so much protein, so if for instance you were eating 10 chicken breasts a day you would only get so much protein and the rest waisted?
hutch6 550
Elite athletes will look at consuming anywhere around 0.8g/lb of body weight per day. Your average regular exercise person will aim for around 0.5g/lb body weight per day. Normal everyday people who don't really exercise will be getting about 0.3g/lb body weight per day. For losing weight you want to look at getting your calories form protein at 0.4-0.6g/lb per body weight per day.
