Ferret Exercise

Recommended Posts

My ferrets are looking tip top condition at the minute, living on a good diet of meat through the winter and plenty of work.

But now with the season closed for me and starting to feed biscuit things will change no doubt

What do people do to keep the ferrets fitness up through the summer

Cheers Gaz

There is plenty of rats holes around where i am , i plan on graftin them a bit on them before it gets to hot. They have also got a big double tier hutch witb pipes in it. What else could i put in the hutch to keep them entertained?

I don't find keeping weight down in the summer months a problem, they naturaly put on a little bit of weight in the winter and lose it in the summer. Obviously they will still need a bit of exercise and mental stimulation when theyre not working.

Cat toy balls go down well. A tub of dirt or something to dig in.

When i feed biscuits i feed them in one of those boredom buster balls designed for dogs, they have to roll it around etc to get the food to come out. keeps mine entertained for hours!

i also have pipes and hammocks in the run so they can flounce about in them. I also just let them out for a mooch when I'm there, assuming I don't have chicks on the gound at the time.

Also when it's really hot I give them a big but shallow tub of water to play in, they love it ;)

Mine seem to spend the spring and summer mating, then going through their pseudo pregnancies. Some of the jills are worse than the others dragging each other around as if they were their kits. I'm happy if they stop squealing and squeaking to sleep. The big fella, a vasectomised hob, is busy with his six girls throughout the spring/summer bringing them all out of season. Never had the need to give them any additional exercise, their cage is a good size with internal platforms.
