Ya can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear ! A good dogs is born to do the job , don't get me wrong a good man is essential , but I can't tell you the amount of times I've seen a muppet with a good

You can't put in what God left out, and I've always said "the best of the best are in a different league from day one, regardless of the obstacles you put in front of them including the owner"

I hate the type of lads that leave a dog in a kennel and don't do anything with them, then take it out and expect the dog to know what to do. IMO getting the dog out as much as possible and putting as

A good stockman knows the limits of his working stock. This "no excuses" mentality is what gets numpties putting hard pups in dig after dig, mangled and then quitting. Or people "testing" their first season terriers by pushing them to the limit. Most dogs including good ones can break from such use. But people who don't know better will get out and ruin the dogs anyway.

You are right, a lot of terriers don't deserve their feed but a lot of guys with terriers don't deserve dogs to feed.

My god. Bred... You wouldn't take a Doberman and think it would be z great sheepdog, yes some seem to be born, but if you had the real breeding in front of you, the dog would be buzzing from it's line ,and yes the odd pup in a litter would inherit all the working attributes , and the rest would lie by the fire. Breeding breeding breeding to get the very best.. But then what do you consider Best. This is completely down to the human , my god if we didn't breed breed breed from the best you would very quickly have nowt . Born are the pups what's in them is bred bred bred. My god that's easy ... And I've heard people don't concider the bitches credentials when breeding pups???? Are you mad the mother is as important as the dog .have a read the question wrong. Men don't make the dog just put it in the right environment as any teacher would do. Born are you messing. I've a budgie here I'm going to take it to falconry see if it's born to it ????????

What a f@&£@g stupid statement!

We are talking about terriers bred for working, so obviously they are bred for that purpose.

No one said anything about budgies or Doberman being sheepdogs WTF!

The question quite simply was do we think good terriers are born or made?

Obviously the breeder is going to ensure to the best of his ability that they are bred for the job, but anyone who knows terriers will tell you that this ensures nothing! They still may all fail, not just because of the owner but simply because they ain't got the minerals!

They are born, dogs that are going to be great usually just are, from young you can see the difference, they have an edge, more forward confident, take everything in there stride nothing fazes them and when the time comes they just work given the opportunity to, and properly entered!

I've seen dogs bred from rubbish do well and I've seen really well bred dogs (on paper!) be utter crap.

I completely agree that they must be bred right but firmly beleive that even then they are born!!!
