What size joints/animals you want to roast will decide the turning force and motor you would require, I have it in my to do list together with a Tandoor that I have done.

If you have access to a welder it would be much easier, for a large spit upto lamb size you could probably use a old cycle gears etc, the shaft from a straight shaft brushcutter should do the job.

If you look on sites across the pond our American friends are in to it in a big way, lots of ideas, also greek/Cyprus sites.

Regards

Gary.

My dad's got it in his head to make a waterwheel powered one for a wild boar! My brothers booked himself in wildboar shooting just before my sister has her big August BBQ. She has a nice brook that runs through her garden so it's a project I need to start looking at soon lol

I made mine from bits of the farm, a water trough for the fire, the frame is a sheep feeder, big old bit of bar which I drilled to push quarter inch rod through to pin the carcass and give something to wire it too. I welded an old seed drill disc to the end and use a g clamp to hold it, just turn it every 10 to 15 minutes quarter of a turn. It means your there for the whole time but it's wood fired so you need to keep an eye on the heat anyway. It's not so bad, got my cast iron kettle and pan so cook my breakfast and lunch while I'm there watching the world go by. it's big too, takes 2 pigs head on or 3 lambs or roe head off. I'm planning on doing a whole Dexter on it for my fortieth in a few years time. Sorry no pictures, not hard to make with a rough plan and the right scrap heap!

I would make it with a drip pan under the meat and the fire at the side, no flare ups and a much better cook, they use woodfired side burning setups in the villages in France, you can go and buy your joint ready cooked sunday lunch time from them.

Gary.
