steve t 923
Following on from the otter thread one of the most common predators around my way is the pinemartin. I see one most weeks, have bolted them from log piles, seen them nesting in peoples lofts on several occasions, got them in the hen house a few times, they show no fear of humans and stand their ground when cornered, everyone I know with chickens has had big losses due to them, and there was one eating cake the other day the wife had put on the bird table. MoChara 1,632
Never seen one up close just glances, i remember when I was a young kid my daddy saw something dead side of road and stopped to see what it was, was a good big pinemartin - as I kid I was so intrigued first time I'd saw one, so naturally he told me all about them. I've been fascinated by them ever since - haven't a clue why cause there buggers That was up in woodland round Fermanagh, full of them up there. Haven't seen not a one here in down - fortunately tho cause I want my chickens living!
MrAlex 4
I'd never seen one until we went up to the west coast of Scotland last year on holiday, then we had one come up to the house every night and eat anything that had been left on the bird table. In the comments book a lot of people were saying that they'd left food out for it but I did wonder whether these were thought of as a nuisance locally.

neil cooney 10,416
Nice to see a pinemartin, around 50 miles from home. Seriously though, it's a joke that they're still releasing them. The spread of forestry has helped them enough without " those who think they know about the countryside" swelling their numbers. They're even being seen in large towns now. Because they're not recognised by most folk they often get mistaken for mink. One man I know who keeps a lot of chickens told a friend of mine he had trapped 35 mink (a non protected species) and had them in a freezer. When my friend seen them he recognised them as pinemartens (fully protected.). Think about it, this man over a space of time had at least 35 of these sniffing around his fowl. Not funny and IMO no loss.
