how can you make a terrier run a place when it says no ? ,,,,, egging a terrier on to check earths your un certian are holding,,, that will confuse it and you end up with a terrier what messes around in empty earths,,,, i think you shuld always trust in the terrier untill it has been proven wrong if the dog wants to work it will find them a quick sniff at the entrances is enough for a terrier what no its job

Nobody said anything about making a dog run an earth but if you've got a big sprawling place with 20/30 holes maybe and you try a dog/ let it sniff at how many before it says no?

Well I would put money on mine, and I would not worry how big the place was or how little scent it had

Havnt read whole thread but has the dog been worked off a quad box .Out the box in a hole back in box ,kennel, like many hunt terriers .known a lot of false marking from these box bound dogs ,a huge f

I agree with dytkos , if a fox has ran through under pressure and pair of hounds have marked it , a good dog will and can go through with no one at home ,......... if hounds mark to no avail then a terrier can go through too no avail, scent still being fresh , obviously the pair of hounds casted on too see if it just ran over or through, as said earlier this time of year can slow a good dog up underground , imo

dont follow hounds so cant comment on that ,, seen terriers on big setts 20+ holes ignore the main fresh kicked out spots and drop in and on threw a hole full of leaves what looks like its not been used for years and dytos maybe i took what you wrote wrong but you said they have to run it to be certian ive never really seen experianced terriers run empty earths only the odd pup if the dog says no its a no for me

So your dog knows if a fox has just ran the place and come out the other side?

If a fox had done that and your dog entered and came out without finding would you know what had happened?

One thing I have learned is that you never know 100% whats going on underground

i have a terrier bitch here its her first season... only 4 digs over her 1st place we went to bout 8 weeks ago was red raw and plenty a signs...bitch checked was away about 3 mins...juked out ran it again about another 3 mins.... said no so we dander on... was a wee bit apprehensive as its her first season but trusted not only her but 100% trust in the man who bred her and that is also very important!, go to next spot 2 hedgerows about 30 burrows lined along a bank and 2 entrances out in a field...as we go in the gate 2 rabbits get up about 100 yards ahead on first ditch...and watch them drop... we walk up past were they dropped and i let the bitch of the lead me and mate chatted at the 2 entrances at the field they looked dead as ceaser... as the bitch mapped the bankin... she never once dropped or stopped at any hole and plenty of rabbits about so she was showing good promise...me and the mate with many seasons under the belt said walk on and try the burrow in the next ditch....hopped the hedge and im away in front, look the bitch aint there shouted to mate...u see that bitch he said aye she dropped in one of them dead holes in the field....so go back listen up...doing a wee bit of digging give her another 25 mins and open up to a dog fox...... its just a matter of trust really..... even the way they go about the yard on a daily basis if there the real deal....

Back to square one, original question, if a fox had just ran in and out the other side your dog would know that and not go to ground?

He's even better than a super terrier FFS

when I approach an Earth I'll let the dog off and he will check every hole nook and cranny but won't drop in if there's nothing home, I don't have the luxury of hounds running them in and marking till a terriers dropped. I have to go with the dog if he's had a sniff round and not went in there's nothing there.

no dytkos!...he would know that the fox had entered the burrow and run straight out through a different enterance and would follow the line the fox went....not hang about an earth doing unnessacery laps appeasing its owner....or the hunt staff......its a terrier working a fox...over 250 years of hard wiring...if bred right.... fed right and entered right.... its a terrier and terriers love to go underground and find and stay with quarry..... if not then it doesnt deserve the great title of terrier!

Slightly different? Maybe so but the outcome still the same if there's nowt in dog won't go. Av seen plenty people hissing dogs on at empty earths usually find out afterwards the dog either a young yin or the owner not got a clue

Edited to say; I'm not the best with wording what I'm trying to get across but any real digging dog won't be arsing around running empty earths

lol...because the scenario you gave was different! if a fox entered and exited a hole while under pressure from hounds and 2 marked...and i run it with a terrier and he entered and exitied i would say the fox had passed through there in the last hour....but if i went to a bankin and a fox hadnt passed through in a while i would not expect nor want a terrier to enter just to keep your mind at rest! does that explain it for you??

Who's hissing dogs into empty earths, if theres scent, the dog should travel and Stop End, what about the fox that was in there in the first place minding it's own business LOL

Like I said earlier, you never know 100% whats happening under the sod
