Before anyone jumps the gun i am well aware that otter hunting is illegal but do any of you lads ever come across them in earths while out,i have dug 2 and bolted 2 in the lenght of time im at terriers.2 year ago we bolted 1 from a drain and dog did not show so we located him working away.We started a dig thinking we were actually diging to a 2nd otter and to our surprise we opened up to a dog fox, both in the 1 drain.I think they are a lovely animal and would not go out of my way to harm 1,seen them on the local rivers several times while fishing, very inquisitive animal.

had a border x lakie on trial last year supposedly a very good sounder had him loose coming up to an earth and could see he picked a hunt along a bank and went to ground at 100 mph and came out at 200 mph about 30 seconds later completly bust up with his tail between his legs out bolted an otter straight after, and the the dog never entered ground again lol there tuff fu*kers

I reckon it was more down to the dog than the otter, tougher game out there pre-ban.

It was more down to the way the dog tried to work it. Otters were considered the top prey on the list of damage done to a Terrier by a lot of old timers. Under them came the Badger, both could be dug regularly and legally. I know of a Terrier had an encounter with an Otter more recently. It had it's top jaw Bone smashed, Teeth taken out and almost killed. The same Terrier had done other stuff lots of times, with a lot less damage. The Terriers they used for Otters were out and out Bayers/Worriers, trying to avoid any contact, some of them could be pushed out of a 'Holt', most Otters bolted into the Rivers, using the Bolt hole which is usually under the water line. Hunted Otters tended to be a bit more stubborn and desperate.

Both that i dug were no trouble to the terrier[bullxrussell] small terrier in comparison to some but was no bayer and both were big dog otters. There is no way i would consider otter as top prey,i know ive only dug 2 but pre-ban i done a lot of other stuff and there is no comparison.

Otters operate different to other ground game. They tend to hold and chew rather than snap, can do alot of damage in a short time if the circumstances are suiting him. When put in by hounds in bygone years and didnt want to move they could test any terrier and alot would be fired out the same hole they entered in fine style!!!

Pulled up to the job this morning and there were two in the river playing about, they both climbed up the bank and went behind a tree out of view for about 10 mins and then came back into the river. Going to get there a bit earlier tomorrow and take the binoculars.

Terriers get the odd mark on them from work, nowadays and in the past, but there's lads who've "heard" about terriers "smashed up" commenting on here.

Keep it real lads and only comment if you were there and seen the hunt.

Also, what idiot came up with the new terms of "smashed" and "gear" ?

And just to add, once they left we thought we should do some work. So I went down the bank to fill the jack up with water slipped in and my phone slipped out of my pocket, so then I had to get right in up to my tits to get it. It was bloody freezing!!!!!!

you do have some tits too. Saw an otter on the Usk last summer, stopped fishing and watched it for a few minutes until it dissappeared. Would love to see them more often, seen a few dead on the bypass going past neath, South Wales. don't see how anyone would like to harm 1...

Have never ever seen a terrier work an otter.Been told however that when fresh bolt fairly easy. When hunted and run in however or in a situation where they can't bolt , different ball game. Know of 2 dogs one a keepers one farm terrier but both on hard side. Both of these were wrecked by otter. Reading old accounts of terriers working them they certainly don't sound a push over. Hard dogs never being desirable. Sounders with a brain being desired. Next time you find a road killed otter just look how they are put together . Pure muscle, razor teeth and strong head. Seen dead dog otter 20 odd pound. Would't take any satisfaction killing one, but would love to hunt and or dig one.Know this aint going to happen in this fecked up country though !
