RodN 41
They were all pretty big well fed rats. I only shot one small one all evening. There really must be thousands of them there! 2 Quote Link to post
hoggysreels 76
Out of interest Rod .. what rifle do you use, and what calibre ... what pellets do you prefer using when despatching the rats ...excellent results, well done .. atb Quote Link to post
hoggysreels 76
Ooops.. just noticed you have already mentioned ...atb Quote Link to post
RodN 41
I find that the AA Fields work best in my HW100 .22.... it would probably be different for another air rifle though! As a matter of interest, before I went on that trip I had a try with JSB Exacts under the same conditions and setup in my garden, at night and using the night vision. Knowing that I would be shooting the rats at 15 to 23 yards I zero'd my rifle at 23 yards.... and then set up a paper target at 15 yards to establish my hold under for that distance. I was pretty surprised at the results! I expected the JSB Exacts to be the same as the AA Field, as they are a virtually identical pellet. It didn't work out that way. The centre target in this sheet has 14 shots (a full mag of the HW100) with the AA Field, and the other four targets were shot using the JSBs, again 14 shots in each. Most of the JSB shots would still have killed the rats with a head shot, but they are all pretty ragged groups in comparison with the AA Field. Quote Link to post
hoggysreels 76
Never tried AA field pellets; have got the Hunters "16g" .. will have to get some and give them a try .. Recently out on the ferals, not had a great deal of luck on the rats. To be honest, thats my own fault. They're around the farms, just lve not put the time in .. will have to put the effort in .. prefer shooting rats to almost any other type of shooting ... Quote Link to post
RemyBolt 420
Oh my goodness! I have been put to shame...as usual. I'll be checking out the AA's soon. Have been getting best results from Accu-Pell, but without trying AA's, I can't say what's best or not. Back to ratting. I'm over excited when I get to see 40 rats, let alone get off shots at them all. Actually the way things are recently, I'd be happy seeing 10 rats. Best haul I've had recently was 33, and that was a crazy fun session. Since then, I'm getting like 3 to 5. If you need a hand there, pop me a message! haha, I wish. Awesome shooting mate. RodN 41
Not my perm unfortunately. I was just fortunate to get an invite over there, and it was a 160 mile round trip for me! Worth it though. Back down to earth tonight.... I spent three hours in the dark on one of my farm perms where the farmer's wife wanted the rats gone from under her hot tub in the garden. Didn't see a single rat! Quote Link to post

Didn't see a single rat! Yeah, I know that feeling. All too well!!! We've all spent hours out with NV, waiting for rats, seen one, it's seen us, and it's gotten away, we then just sat there and waited, and waited, and waited. We could hear them, but they weren't coming out to play. Then your friend text you at 4am saying how many rabbits they've taken out that same night. We call those nights, Tuesday's and Saturday's! haha I'd hate to shoot by a hot tub! Too scared I'd pop something and have to replace it. Have you tried bait to lure them out? Quote Link to post

Shooting at a sensitive background.... sight parallel with it instead of using it as the backstop! Oh yes... I baited up with runny nutella several hours earlier. There were (old) holes and runs but no rats there any longer. If there had been then I would have seen them with the NV when it was dark. I sat there for three hours. The farmer took that as good news when I reported it to him this morning. I had told him not to disturb the area or change anything as that would put them off, but now he is going to fill in the holes. Job done. (Until next time). 1 Quote Link to post

Jimc83 1
Wow, nice numbers there mate. I too have the hw100s in .22. Great gun that. Most rats I've had in one night is about 25 on my uncles land. In my defence I did have my crazy cousin with me with his .410. May have spooked some of them 1 Quote Link to post
mark williams 7,555
I use two HW 100`s in .22 and .177, both calibers are AA fields diablo - both strike very hard indeed. I can honestly say either caliber more than does the job on any vermin. atb. Edited March 14, 2015 by mark williams 3 Quote Link to post
