jwhizz420 177
I have this problem with my whippet, his recall was great, then one day just kept walking, which resulted in me panicking, the more I panicked the more the dog wouldn't come back. Had a think about it when I got home, I always have a ball in my pocket , he will always chase his ball, it's my get out of jail card. Not saying it's wrong or right but works for me 2 Quote Link to post
bird 9,985
The thing is with some Saluki types and pures is that their drive is focussed purely on what they can hunt and catch. Anything that doesn't fall into this very narrow perception of what is important to them, is bound to bore them or not even be relevant to them in any way. They simply do not perceive people as essential: but you can make them see you as essential by engaging their prey drive: hence tug play, usually with something furry, and to see you as an essential part of the ferreting team. I've had dogs similar to yours, but out ferreting they become completely focussed on what I and the ferrets are doing. It isn't as though they are stupid, they just can't see the necessity of coming when called unless there is something major in it for them, and the major thing has got to be prey. only asking lol, but with these so called dogs who have this type mind set of a saluki , I get a feeling there could be hard to stock train. meaning when dogs are say 100yds ahead of you etc, and that kind of hunting mode as you say salukixs are and get like, and even if stock trained . I always get a feeling that if soming happened the dog are to far away from you, for you to get on top of it, if that makes sence .lol I think saluki as lot to offer with there hunting ability and great stamina , as you say natural hunters . but I think with any type dog , they have to be totally domineered when around sheep, meaning when you call them they come to you, not think about it 1st .! don't get me wrong I like a dog to act natural , not all this carnt think for it self stuff or cant piss with out looking at the owner , I ve had that with some colliexs but I do think its a very thin line your walking , when a dog like to call the shots, more so like above if you haven't got that instant recall if something went wrong . but no dout people with these type dogs will disagree . lol Quote Link to post

I like them I think there great dogs and there xs, but as you say you really got to know how they tick and learn live with them. are 1xs or ones with with say 3/8 saluki any easier to train or they all very similar .? desertbred 5,490
the x,s I have seen and been outwith seem more trainable than the pures but thats just the feelings I get as I personally have never kept x,s ,I suppose a lot will depend whats in the x also . Yet to see a good hunter that could be called back when chasing though. Quote Link to post
Jim1987 12
My pup used to do the same just stood there looking at me and ran further away if I went close, best solution I found was to walk the other way or hide from him and call him. 1 Quote Link to post

Dead Eyes 681
To be fair to the man, I think this dog will work out fine. Because he gives a shit. He's asking for advise in the lurcher section. Not putting a different type of post in the working dogs and livestock section, like some might 2 Quote Link to post

wuyang 513
My mums whippet has always been a funny sod, standing some long distance away when out with my dad. I thought it would never do the same with me.......it did. I think it remains some dogs are just not fully right upstairs,,,,,, not always a case of bonding..........this dog can be fine one minute then the next you've no chance of getting it back for some hours......God knows what the trigger is. It's better with females. Quote Link to post
