brucemyster 75
anyone built one of these log cabin type buildings on a wooden base rather than a concrete base? Can't see why a decent heavy duty wooden base, with pressure treated beams shouldn't do the job.

leegreen 2,169
Haven't bought it yet but it's going to be 5 metres x 3.8 metres If your ground is good and solid, wood is ok, preferably sleepers. Personally I would use some thing concrete, it doesn't rot and keeps the timber off of the damp.
brucemyster 75
Did it come as a kit and did you build it yourself? The company I'm buying from wanted over £1200 to build a concrete base and £800 to put the thing up, so I'm going to build a heavy duty base and build it myself, can't be that difficult, the corners are all notched so just a case of using the 3,4,5 method of squaring it up, a level for the uprights and Bob's your uncle, checked the building regs and it's just a matter of building it a meter+ away from the boundary to negate the need for fire retardants and remembering to keep the base to only 4" from the ground level to keep the height under 2.5 meters to the eves thus negating the need for planning permission

The beams won't be in contact with the ground they'll be connected to corner posts concreted in, the cross members will be supported by posts onto heavy duty paving slabs, before affixing the floor i'll be using a damp proof membrane and weed suppressing material
leegreen 2,169
If your floor is off the ground, way ya go You'll have to get something meaty for the floor joists though 3.8m is a big span.

Going to have intermediate posts or there will be to much flex, plus don't want to go any thicker than 4 inches (don't want to have to dig down to sink anything thicker) or the build height will contravene planning regulations and as my neighbour on one side is an absolute knob head you can bet I would definitely get a visit from the planning officer

Sometimes you have to pay rates on sheds that have fixed floors. Could be wrong but if you've got a dick for a neighbour it would be worth finding out.
