yapping lurcher

Witton your an Arse hole plain and simple!! :wallbash: Steve don't listen to (what they tend to call them selves) "Dog Men"!!! :feck:

My bitch was the one mentioned in the thread that tote posted! She's coming on great. Took me a long time and alot of hard work but got there in the end. I'm not saying she's 100% mute because she isn't if a rabbit hits cover and she still has sight she lets out a bark or whine or if the rabbit is spinning her inside out upside down she'l giv lil yips on the turns! Apart from that she's great. Some dogs just do it and thats life. Iv'e learned to live with it and could never part with my dog. She's doing the buisness for me now and doesn't miss many being only 15 months old!! :D

Stick to it steve go ferreting and grab a load of live bunnies drop one a day or every other day for a few weeks jus to get her confidence up gradually getting the distance further from the rabbit. Then take her on the lamp and don't let her slip untill your right up on a squatter. If you don't see one go home. It'l take time but hopefully you can improve her!!

Best of luck with your bitch steve!! :toast:

Ignore these arsehole "Dog Men" no real DOG MAN could look down a barrel of a gun at a healthy dog espescially one they have a bond with and pull the trigger!!!

The way i see it your an arse hole, you obviously didn't bring the dog on right if its yapping. Its brought out in a dog either entered to early or given stupid slips.... pups need to catch or they soon loose heart and become frustrated. If everyone kept and bred from shite the class of lurcher would go down hill, and we are seeing this now. So its either keep shite, pass shite around or put em down. I know which one i would choose.....If i had a dog that was opening up i would hold it back for a thew weeks then give it loads of dropped rabbits, infact id make it so the rabbit couldn't get away.....and then id slowly introduce it back to the lamp...walking up on squatters ect basicly do everything i can to make that dog catch.....its conman sence really, and if this doesn't work then its gone, simple. At the end of the day i cant afford to own a dog that draws to much attention to where i am and what im doing. So its either put it down or have it sat in kennels for the rest of its life....because it wouldn't get lamped....not by me in my current situation. It drives me mad when a dog starts yapping when its on the slip watching another dog run, never mind yapping all over the field for 1 letting anyone and everyone know im there and for 2 sending every bit of game in the area running. Its not good and i wouldn't put up with it.

Look obviously your talking about something you know nothing of as obviously you havn't had a dog that's opened up (you should thank you lucky stars!!) My pup was unfortunate to end up on the arse end of a hare that was lifted on a walk with another mature dog! Now she's not a pup and she's doing the buisness she's out lamping a minimum of 3 times a week and doing things beyond my expectations. There is never a problem that can't be solved with a working dog except for injury imo. This is my dogs first season and as bitza says the only way is up if things are done properly. My bitch has never yipped or whined on the slip. No one really knows why they open up maybe it is frustrating some say it's to call the pack in for help. Who knows all I know is that steve is asking for advice and you telling him to shoot his dog is disgusting advice imo. I'm sure many people agree with me!

Anyway argument over! Steve is asking for advice and maybe we can offer him some good advice!! So maybe witton instead of telling him to blow his dogs brains out you can tell him how you would attempt to overcome it first post rather than in your second post!! (trying to act hard me thinks) :boxing:

No mate just stating what i would consider, if nothing else worked. I agree i should of included what steps i would take  I agree a lot of things can be worked on with a dog but there comes a point where a dog reaches it potential and if its potential is lower than what you want then.....If it hasn't got it init then no matter how hard you try the dog wont do it. I know this is coming away from the issue of yapping but lets say you want a deer dog, what would you do keep adding onto your number of dogs trying to find one that has it init or just give up after say one doesn't do the job? And just settle for that dog that wont do the game you brought it for? Or would you re home it....pass it on?

if a dog isnt working out there are a fair few lurcher specific rescues these days that rehome to people wanting a lurcher as a pet, this way the dog gets a good home and a chance of having a good quality of life with someone that isnt interested in breeding from them or working them, imo theres no need to start shooting dogs

If mistakes/accidents have been made entering a dog that make it yap, steps should be taken to remedy them. If things can not be remedied hard decisions have to be made.

I find if homework is done the right dog for the job can be found without to much trouble however there are no guarantee's!

A feind has a lurcher that opens up. This dog, has a fantastic nose, great in cover ect, but opens up. He never uses it for lamping, just daytime, where he has permission. It is a very handy dog to have about the place i can tell you.

This dog, a couple of years ago, accidently, in a matter of 5 mins, got to his whippet bitch in heat.

He was pissed, to say the least.

Anyhow, pups were born, raised and given away.

Most went to working homes and not one of these, opened up, not a sound out of them!!!

Prehaps he was just lucky??

The father of the pups, was enterd very carefully aswell.

Right mate lets add to the huge fecking problem that is the rescues, now thats really fair isn't it....if the dog isn't upto my standards then i would never even consider expecting someone else to put up with it. There are thousands of dogs stuck in rescue centers the last thing i'm about to do is add to the problem. A lot never find homes anyway and get pts, in many cases rescues are the middle man the end result will very often end up the same anyway.

some do stop with plenty off time off ...imo...its like you have to start again with em ...never owned a yapper but a mate has who i go out with quite often ....it has now stopped  ....but its a rarety .....if you think the dogs has some good potencial then give it some time  ..if things dont work out then find a good pet home for it ..... ....theres people who bring dogs on in the correct manner and they still yapp .....ive got a new pup and i will do what i always do and thats is like i stated before ...droppers and plenty off them ....its one off my worst nightmares to be honest .....so i will be puttting alot off time in to that one particular asspect off the training and fecking hope for the best ..........all the best snoop

Witton, i do a lot of work for 2 lurcher rescues..................1 a dog like this wouldnt be seen as "giving someone else the problem" as it would go to a non working home where yapping when chasing rabbits really wouldnt be an issue and 2 non of the dogs in the rescues i work with are PTS and i mean NONE, in fact the council kennels use these organisations to rehome dogs in PTS situations..............what needs to be done to eleviate the amount of rescue dogs is for people to stop breeding dogs they dont want or cant get rid of...............anyway enough of that as this post isnt about rescue...........in short , dont try and make statements about things you know nothing about.
