Shroughaun 23
Ok where to start. I've been do a good bit of pheasant shooting, lamping foxes and ferreting with my brother for the last number of years. But over the last while we've been talking bout getting into terriers, went to few shows and stuff last year. Is this a mad choice to make now, would it be hard to get started as don't really have anyone to show us the ropes. And would the ferreting experience stand to us. Quote Link to post
HPR 1,161
Theres nothing to it the dog go's in and you dig. the hardest parts getting a dog good enough to stay in and getting permission. go for it , nothing garenteed but you will be half way there if you can get a pup from good working stock. good luck 1 Quote Link to post

Well if it was just that simple wouldn't it be great. Terrier work is very hard to get started before even getting a terrier id advise a season or two with experienced men that have a good knowledge and understanding of the game. Try your hardest to get into someone's gang but it can be hard especially the way things are going. Good luck and wish you all the best. Its great when ya get up and going 3 Quote Link to post

Shroughaun 23
Permission is not a problem as we have a good bit of that from other reasons, finding sum one to go with and give us a bit of knowledge on the other hand could prove difficult, it's just if we wanted to be ready for next season would I need a 12 month old pup now. As I said we have most equipment from ferreting Quote Link to post
leethedog 3,071
I'm just getting back in to digging after 20 years of running dogs all I can say is read as much as you can ask questions but don't be to prying and be honest I used to dig with me dad but I was young and not a lot went in at 13 now he is wheel chair bound he can tell me but there is nothing like going and doing it try and find someone local who will let you tag along and do their digging with them Quote Link to post

Its great when ya get up and going Well said Young Man but IMO using the term GANG to describe a few lads who hunt together is a mistake. It looks like at the moment this site is crawling with anti's. Big Deal. If we stopped discussing our little pride and joys then the scum have beaten us. None of us break the law with our dogs and if someone is giving out information they're being stupid anyway because dog thieves are a bigger threat than the antis are. What is a pity though is if some novice is looking to gain some knowledge they're being looked at with a lot of suspicion. 6 Quote Link to post
Shroughaun 23
I'm a bit bemused by the way this topic has went which is a pity, do new comers last long on this site if the don't I could see why, apart from a few comments here (which I appreciate) theirs probably no need for the rest of them, I was only looking for bit of info not a school yard dilemma. Am I an anti NO, am I Irish obviously why would I say otherwise. Quote Link to post

Its great when ya get up and goingthe best way to learn is do it by your self. And there isnt a lot to know really is there. or have i just been doing to long im taking it for granted. if someone was to work terriers for a 1000 years they still wouldn't know it all. there is a serious amount to learn about terriers. The best way isnt to do it yourself because you will make a lot of silly mistakes costing terriers lives ive been in the game for 7 years now and theres no turning back if im not out with the terriers im thinking about terriers. Ive made silly mistakes and thankfully there has been men there that know alot about terrier work that have saved me and my terriers out of some deep shit. ' Literally on a few occasions 'lol. Getting yourself out with experienced men will teach you alot. For instance how to read a earth. How to look after a terrier in sick bay. How to dig a hole. How to break in . How to dispatch the quarry most effectively and quickly. If you have no option but to get yourself a terrier n spade n go for it. Id advise to read a few good books before just to pick up a few tips that could maybe save yourself some hassle. 4 Quote Link to post
