I'm ex shepherd and stockman, and fancied this part time game to keep me out and about due to ill health.

Wished I'd began it 20 year ago as no hassle and still out on the land.

talpex, talpa traps but duffus the mainstay.

Joking aside these feckers have to be controlled that's a no brainer.

I cant think of a better job in the world as long as you aint relying on it as your sole income.

Tis a hobby, pursuit that instead of costing money pays a good dividend instead.

Fair play to you! I,'ve turned away all farm jobs for about eight years now, I loved driving around the fields enjoying the views and sounds, but I was losing too much money doing it, and it was killing physically, my knees, back and right shoulder were buggered after a mole season.

When I say I was losing too much money, I mean that by say spending a week clearing a couple of thousand acres on a dairy farm and say earning four or five hundred, I could earn significantly more by doing say ten domestic gardens in a couple of days with no physical effort and still have the rest of the week to earn doing other pest work.

Not knocking anyone doing the farm work, it's a great job, just no longer the one for me.

I’m really glad you posted that Trapper,

I’m now in the situation where I’m getting established enough, doing gardens/paddocks, that people have started recommending me to farmers they know.

I really like the idea of roaming the countryside all day; but I really, really don’t like the idea of ever turning down domestic work because of it.

Still haven’t made a decision; but nice to know I’m not the only one to have had the problem.

By the way: well done Bryn, good luck with your job.

It's a difficult one muddy! It's like a snowball, more wom more work, more wom and before you know it your thinking this is killing me. It's a great situation to be in but.......!

Some on here know that I had some health issues which to be honest have left me with far less stamina, plus I ain't no spring chicken anymore. I now try to work smart concentrating on domestic stuff, there is ocean's of it out there, but as I'm sure Matt would tell you , you musnt be a one trick pony. Domestic one offs, like fleas, wasps, clusters etc seriously boost your annual income.

Matt would have told you that right up to the point where he became totally disillusioned with the pest control industry and decided to concentrate on moles

I do mainly farm work with a few garden jobs thrown in. A few years ago, it was the other way around; but I've got a system for the farms now and enjoy it too much to go back to general pest control...

Sure, I get cold, wet, muddy and knackered........ but.......... I love it.

Money? Well, I do OK, but probably work harder for less money than I did. One thing I've learned in the last few years is that there are more important things in life than money

Everyone has their own preferences, and I'd not condemn anyone for the choices they make

I've made my choices in life; some good, some bad. The decision to come back down here and do what I'm now doing was the right one for me, and my family; but it wouldn't be for everyone

Fair comment Matt! Now if we're discussing pest control in general, ie black box checking, eu regs, loss of rodenticides etc then I'm right with you, only saying to Mel the other night that I can see a time not too far off where I say stuff it, no more contract work. It seriously bores the crap out of me, add that to ever increasing paper work, it just isn't worth it.

Probably another five years at most and I'll flog the contracts, and just do rabbits, moles and the one off,s.

The job earns a certain kind of kudos, and folk that once treat you like one of their dogs now shut up and listen to what you have to say regards the problem.

feckin love it and never been happier.

Thats right,....being a Trapper is a great life,.and yes, the job does bring you a certain amount of respect..

It has always been like this, and in bygone days a Mole Trapper was much in demand.

His pay was better, than the average farm hand or rural workers,...and it is because of this, that men tried to keep the proffession, in the family and kept things, close to their chest...

"Tis' Witchcraft thy knows"

This secrecy, is the reason for all the old wives tales and foolish nonsence, spouted about moles and their destruction..

It suited a trapper to hear such things,.and in many cases, the foolishness lives on,.even today...

As for myself,...I have never been busier....

My wife helps me with the job, and we worked out that if we do a few months on the moles (and rabbits) and another five months on the wasps,..it should leave us with plenty of time to enjoy a few breaks away...

I think that everyone needs to chill out for a while ,...there is no sense in working oneself into an early grave..

Great to hear so many guys living their dream,...long may it continue.. :victory:
