bryn27 89
Must be heavy shit to carry around if your on foot with all the other bits and bobs? Quote Link to post
Matt 160
What are peoples thoughts on the two groves on top of the blade? I know Chieftain Forge have tried to replicate the same thing, and I had thought the purpose of them may have been to lift out trap sticks (the ones to hold the board tops down), but those look more 'dishy' than the others I've seen Any ideas? heritage 202
What you have there is actually an origional rabbit trappers spade...... The two slots on the top of the blade were used when extracting trap chains / pegs......they were used as a means of leverage. There was a mint example on eBay recently. 3 Quote Link to post

What would the probe be for please genuinely interested? Would it be part of the rabbit trappers kit or for another application altogether? TC Quote Link to post
heritage 202
The spade itself is without doubt a rabbit trappers spade although I can only assume the probe is specifically for mole work,.... I am familiar with most rabbit trappers tools and the probe wouldn't have a place. If I had to hazard a guess Id say the probe would be used to detect shallow mole runs . Quote Link to post
Matt 160
No, I think the probe is for making holes for whip sticks I agree with you about the spade Heritage, but I have seen a very similar design from a catalogue in 1880 which described it as a molecatchers spade Quote Link to post
heritage 202
In all honesty,..... The spade I'm 100% sure of but the probe.... I really couldn't comment any further as I simply don't know... My "mole run theory" was just an educated guess 1 Quote Link to post
