Went out yesterday to a great wee spot where i have permission. Just a few fields which are overrun with rabbits. So get there decide to ferret along a fenceline first. I get my long net out and start running it along the fence which isnt easy due to it being very windy and im on my tod. get it sorted and throw my wee jills in and get my wee dog into position beside me. Waiting for ages and nothing is happening. I get the locater out and can see the ferrets are still moving about then two rabbits bolt from a hole right next to my feet, one hitting the net and the other running the opposite way down another hole. So spent a few hours along different parts of the fence getting very few bolts and when they did bolt they would just nip back down a hole feet away. Went to a different bit looking for a good spot to bolt to the dog. These fields look like swiss cheese theres holes and warrens all over the place. Eventually find a spot and put the ferrets down and again the rabbits are hole hopping but the dog got a couple of runs where she just missed them by a midges baw hair before they got to safety. I said sod this crap, grab the ferrets and start heading home. On the way home the dog chases a rabbit alongside an old wall and into a pile of big stones in a holding pen. I block the hole where it went in and lift a stone out of the way and i can see the rabbit, put my hand in and grab it, easiest catch ever. I turn round and spot a wee thirty odd holer. So i decide to purse them up too got three bolts and ended the day on five rabbits. as im waiting on the ferrets my last jill comes out with no collar on. Brilliant. So have a scan and realise iv four foot dig to retrieve it. It ended up a six foot dig because i reckon the burrows underneath collapsed. Got my collar back gutted the rabbits and noticed two were carrying. Thats me done ferreting now for the season.

It is hard work. Carrying nets spade lunch and keeping a pup under control that wants to chase rabbits in the next field when things are quiet and boring to her. Then you have the weight of the rabbits you catch to carry too. But still i love to get out.

its around a five mile walk from my house to where i go and i dont have a car at the moment so the walk can be hard enough if your not used to it. I took two young fellas out with me once and i havent saw them since. they were in bits after it and they only had to carry seven rabbits between them.

61 years young tomorrow. Carried 11 with my box up a bit of a hill and was completely knackered.That was Saturdays mission. The only tuck I had with me was the hip flask with some damson vodka in it. Not all bad. Ended up with 15. I think we are going to try one more weekend but after that I think it's gonna finish. Shame really. We had a hell of a few weeks. Trout and the allotment next. Jok.

Lol. Good on you jok im only 38 but i feel it today. Back and legs are sore and it doesnt help iv been loaded with a bug the past few days. It has to be done though, i start climbing the walls if i dont get out. Time to sort the fishing gear out for me too.

i like trout and salmon fishing but the price of a licence here is a joke, plus i dont catch that many, i prefer the sea fishing i seem to catch more and its nice when you catch something different.
