perthshire keeper 1,239
with a lot going on about the duffus traps and how good they are..well its over 10 years since ive handled one.and i was pondering how much diffrence the small loops, small trigger holes and thick setting pin realy matters.. so i made the modifications i wanted to see in a trap..armed with nothing but a steady flow of tea some pliers and a rabbit snare first job strip a trap down and re-drill the trigger holes to be 1mm bigger than the wire and de-burr it... see how much smaller they are!! next make some loops from 2mm hi tence wire and lash them onto the springs with brass wire this bit was tricky and i got the first loop a rough ass shape the next was perfect! TA DA! its going in the ground today silk smooth triggering...a moths fart could push that trigger! not a bad way to pass the time whilst the snow clears 6 Quote Link to post
mazperks 18
Well done, I suppose It would be simple enough to fit a new trigger as well. Some of mine are too soft, you should'nt be able to bend them so easily by hand. And the trigger loop could be made a bit wider for the anorexic moles slipping round the side. Quote Link to post
Giro 2,648
I am no trapper.. I dont get why yous need to "fettle" a product.. Surely they are inferior to begin with ?? I have set fenns, so that my limited experience with traps.. Edited March 2, 2015 by Giro 1 Quote Link to post
TOMO 26,217
I don't understand why you have all that snare wire round everything? Quote Link to post
mazperks 18
Giro, if you read the Matts thread on "The ultimate Duffus trap" all will be revealed. Yes many traps are inferior, because they are not made (for the most part ) by people with a working knowlege of mole trapping, so they just copy an existing example which could be a clone of a clone etc. In this way they can get even worse as they get slightly modified each time to make production easier/cheaper. Giro 2,648
Aye i did read it .. I just think the companies are letting you guys down.. Suppose its in your interest to get the best from your traps.. It don't seem right that they need modified.. Fair enough setting the sensitivity but a all this drilling and wire seems labour intensive. Quote Link to post
Matt 160
and there was me thinking you'd be chopping up bits of wood after our chat last night Very good mate Is it as 'silky' smooth as it looks?Mazperks, please don't credit me with starting that thread It was Nicepix that started the conversation about the traps I just used it as a great excuse to get on one of my hobby horses and nag a trap maker Giro, nail, hit, head......... That's exactly what we are saying; nobody should have to 'fettle' a new product it's either fit for the purpose for which it's intended, or it isn't. Hopefully, we will have something fit very soon Quote Link to post

Matt 160
You might want to amend your country of origin if your flag is anything to go by........ molecatchers are frequently unemployed in that neck of the woods Quote Link to post
Mr Wasp 187
Its all looking very technical to me Holes drilled here and there, bits of wire strapped on. You could name it "The strap on". Will it work any better? Time will tell... Quote Link to post
Giro 2,648
Plenty moles and mole catchers here... I just fancied catching a few, to see if i can do it.. I would not fancy it as a full time occupation - would rather just pick and choose, If I found it was alright for the crack. It might help with getting some sport with the dogs and ferrets.. I am fairly lazy, there'd be no short cuts catching them though If I had to mess about with them as well, it would have my head spinning.. Quote Link to post
perthshire keeper 1,239
I don't understand why you have all that snare wire round everything? the loops are hande made not the original ones and ive made them so their is no loop to loop join at the base meaning the join is at the top....the wire holds the twoends of the loop together and to the spring....and i think the lashing on looks sexey Quote Link to post
Mr Muddy 141
Probably already been said in the ultimate trap thread - I couldn't manage all eight pages of it - but I really do like the little holes, that's a very good idea; and the triggers being that bit closer to the loops. Nice work, good luck with it. Quote Link to post
