Just a question on where you all get you're net making equipment from. ive been ferreting for the past five years and ive decided to save some money and start making my own nets

depends on what size net you'll be making and wether you knit them straight through or shaped

I make purse nets 4' 6" shaped and get 12 from a 500gm spool or 8 same length straight through

same as the widest part of the shaped net 18 meshes wide 24 rows long using 21/4" meshboard

i get 12 out of a spool i start with two rows of 8 then go to 17 do four rows then reduce back to the 2 8s n best place pal is agouti nets where some of the lads have already stated atb hope this helps

it is at first but you'll get used to it, its the first couple attempts on your first couple of rows what will annoy the hell outta you but once you get the hang of it you'll be sound good luck n atb

i'm waiting for some stuff to come through myself so had a crack with the kitchen string (much to the missus' displeasure!)

 

i found this video tutorial on youtube the most helpful.

 

clear explanation, easy to follow and makes it all sound pretty straight forward. it only took me about 30 minutes to get the knot sorted and meshes an even size (and that was usung a wooden spatula as a meshboard!) as soon as you've got the hang of the knot it should just be a rinse and repeat job for the rows. (i'm hoping!)

 

watch the video through first, then watch it with a loaded needle and keep pausing at each step and you shouldn't struggle too much! it shouldn't take more than a couple of nets before it becomes something that doesn't require a lot of thought. (but then i do a bit of man knitting with paracord so am used to running lines of the same knot.)

tom practise knit in them with wool or old twine/string mate, then use your bought nylon ect ,will save on waste ,every body makes a baxxs of a few nets at first, if they tell the truth, good luck

thats what i did pal saves you having to throw it away if it goes wrong lol i used string from the postoffice to practise did 2 nets then started using the poly stick at pal atb
