There are not many Black rats (Ship Rats) in the UK and they are smaller than the Brown rat/Norway rat, so if yours is really large I suspect it is simply a very dark Norway rat. Virtually impossible to tell what it is from the picture.

I don't think there are many Black rats inland in the UK, (I can't remember the last time I actually saw one) most are in coastal regions...where are you?

Last time I checked there were not many Sea Ports or Coastal resorts in S. Yorks, so I guess it is just a dark coloured Rattus norvegicus (it isn't that uncommon, there are a lot of different shades of colour) , perhaps its been eating all those GM crops/seeds to get so large.

Edit

Back in the day we used to run annual competitions for the biggest rat, to gain entry it had to be a minimum of 20" nose to tail, we got a fair few every year!

Good shooting. The black one looks like a dark Norwegian that's wet. It'll probably dry out and be much lighter. Good shooting though.

I bagged me a black and white rat once. I assume it must have been a pet rat that escaped and made friends with then locals. Never thought that would happen. When a pet rabbit escapes, the wild rabbits usually kill it, if it's a male. So assumed the same for rats.

Anyone know anything about this kind of behaviour?

Pressuming that's from nose to end of tail? Had a few that would qualify but biggest one iv seen was last week wish I'd had chance to get a shot off would of easily been biggest iv shot.

With regards to rat in pic think its just a brown that's wet they can look black and flash on pic prob makes it look darker.
