bullmastiff 615
Say you wanted a lurcher for a particularly fast quarry let's say for comparison sake a roe Deer, Maybe the occasional long run. Maybe a minute, maybe less? But only 5 or 6 runs a night. Perhaps you wanted to take a fox if it presented itself? Let's take a stab in the dark and guess it might be used for daytime work as well as lamping? What type of lurcher would you pick and why? 1 Quote Link to post

trenchfoot 4,243
I would hope most lurchers should be capable of those requirements 2 Quote Link to post
marshman 7,757
I don't think there's a magical recipe is there . If you can see a lurcher working and doing what you require, does it matter what combination of running dog herding or bull terrier it might have in its breeding! I've witnessed many different lurchers doing all that your asking and can't give you a definite answer . Quote Link to post

roybo 2,873
A coursing bred dog from the right lines could do all that if entered sympathetically.a small bit of bull wouldn't hurt ,but I'd be more interested what the parents and to some extent, grandparents done, and done well, Not beyond the realms of a lot of lurchers, But if I was to buy one on in I'd buy a pup from a couple of generations of breeding for what you want if possible 2 Quote Link to post
Moorside 642
Id agree with Roybo to be honest, I found myself in a position last season particularly that my little beddy x was outmatched by stuff that was getting up. So I decided to buy in and my requirements were pretty much as described by bullmastiff. All the runs we get round here are quite short so it had to be an up and at em type. I took a long time seeing what was about spoke to plenty of people and ended up dropping on a pup when id basically given up on the idea because of work etc. The lad had the dam and grand dam, the sire also and he was line bred so I took the plunge its early days but shes built for the job I want her to do so fingers crossed. bullmastiff 615
It always falls back to the same thing. Buy a pup from dogs doing the job you want... but how do find dogs doing the job you want!! Quote Link to post
buster gonads 862
Any dog as long as its big enough, fast enough and hard enough. Quote Link to post
