Could Not Hit An A4 Target

Recommended Posts

Hi guys went out with hmr now this thing is on the ball normaly hitting 10p size targets out to 100 yards easy but dropped target back to 200yards just to see if it grouped well and make a note of drop off but could not hit the a4 size target dropped back down to 50 yards I hit it but was grouping about 2.5 inch there was only 2 things I thought could have changed this and the first was the ammo used a different brand to my normal stuff same 17grain just different name on box .I know it could change point of impact but not to group so bad the other thing was I took my bi-pod off I was shooting from sticks I do with bi-pod on could the missing weight of the bi-pod make such a difference?

The bipod may be distorting the rifle forearm when you tighten it up and therefore affecting the barrel

even if it's free floated, it doesn't take much to alter the strike point.

I have a Ruger No1 and the forearm is actually fixed to the barrel, a bipod on board (Harris Swivel) moves the point of

impact 2-3" at 100 yards as opposed to no bipod, worse than that it's inconsistent so I can't even remove it

and then put it back on without re-zeroing. So guess what no bipod on the Ruger.

My first question is how windy was it as you probably know even light wind can play havoc with the HMR. Change of ammo - most of it is made in the same place but still I wouldn't rule it out. Re the bipod removal - i reckon the chance of balance certainly can and does effect the zero and for proper testing the only way to confidently get some groups is to shoot prone of the bipod.

The next still day try it prone with the bipod on and work back to 200 after a re-zero from 50m and hopefully you'll be all good.

Have you dropped the gun and bent the silencer i had a sling fail on my hmr and it fell off my back i thought I had caught it but the sak took a hit and bent on the thread I had a similar result and had to replace the mod to get the accuracy back

Is your barrel free floating if so actually check it with a piece of paper run it between barrel and stock it should run down unhindered, I had a CZ that was not grouping consistently found that the free floating barrel was touching the stock, sanded it back to free barrel and the grouping tightened up and was consistent there after.
