Putange Traps

Question for Nicepics.

Being in France do you use the putange much yourself. And if so how does it compare catch rate wise, to the Duffus or Talpex, in general situations.

Also out of interest is the mole behaviour over there just the same as over here.

I know It’s not my question to answer, but if you don’t mind me trying the traps part; horses for courses I recon mate.

 

I did a domestic last week: chose the three different traps you mentioned that I thought looked right for the runs I found; went back midmorning today and - nice little ego boost - I’d got it spot on for once.

 

I’m sure on someone else’s turf I mightn’t have caught even one – or I would have spent too long choosing traps to make any money.

But, like I said; for me, it’s horses for courses.

To be honest I dismissed them as being useless when I saw them in supermarkets and garden centres. I had seen videos of French pros using them and it wasn't what I was used to. They use a dirty great spade and lift a huge clod out, put the traps in and replace the clod. Then they check the traps using a dog that indicates any kills. All the pros use these traps. It was torchey on here who championed them and because of what he wrote I bought a few. Initially I was sceptical but the more I used them the more they caught.

 

The reason I don't use them all the time is that checking them means opening up the tunnel again. You can't see any signs whether they have caught or not from above ground. But they are useful for under patios, around tree roots and where the tunnels aren't straight enough to put a normal trap in. I also have another use for them, but that's not for the open forum.

 

Mole behaviour is probably the same except there are loads more of them. Its very rare that I just take one or two moles out of a garden. And there seems to be a lot of occasions where neighbouring moles immediately take over tunnels where the mole has been trapped. Last week I put ten traps in one garden. Checked two days later and only one trap had been activated, a double capture. All the other traps were clean, none blocked. Two days later I took another five from the same traps. In some gardens it can take three or four weeks to clear up completely. I've done another garden twice in 18 months, each time taking one mole out and solving the problem. Last week I was called back and took 9 out in three visits. You just can't predict anything.

Well Nicepix you've got me going with that teaser about your secret use for them. I hope it has something to do with catching moles, and not "S-M".

There are actually two uses for the Putanges that haven't been mentioned yet. One is that if you get a client who has a dog or cat that is likely to disturb a Duffus or Talpex, or you have trap robbin' vermin around, you can slip these in, replace the turf and discretely mark the spot so Fido, Brock or Dwaine doesn't know they are there.

 

The other use is just something that is better not spread about in public knowledge. Nothing naughty, just better kept to ourselves.
