I believe that the issue with the talpa firing and not catching has nothing to do with spring strength. Alas, our strict non educational policy does not allow me to elaborate

I started off with the Talpa's, but I had a frustrating year of not catching in them despite the trap being triggered. I was told by a certain person on here to set them so fine that 'a goldfinches fart' would trip them. I bet they had some chuckles thinking about me wondering why i couldn't catch. It took a while, but I sussed the Talpa, but I wasn't keen on them. Enter the Talpex. Suddenly I was catching lots more, and any blocked duffus types were soon swapped for the Talpex. I now have 50 of them, most are in the ground, or will be by the end of today. I still use duffus types as my mainstay, but for gardens I wouldn't want to be without the Talpex.

ratbait is a fantastic company, well worth dealing with.... :victory:

Cannot see why you had problems....

I gave you that advice, because the style of trap was new to you..

I wanted to impress upon you, the need to set the pin so that it would not fall back into the wee hole on the trigger plate..

I only meant to help you,.nothing more than that,...and I have certainly never laughed at you..

I don't find anything about you funny....

Right, I set my Talpex/Talpa style traps real fine ... in fact, I set all traps for moles,..nice and fine. Moles using this style of push up trap frequently force a fair bit of soil in front of themselves..this is a natural occurance I would never deliberately set the trap hard in order to allow a mole to get well into the jaw spread. before firing, because this can sometimes result in foul catches...The Talpex has a much wider 'horse stance' than the copies..

I encountered these traps 30 years ago,...but was too dumb to realise how good they were..

Every trapper finds his own path..we all have our ways of doing things to earn a crust..

It is swings and roundabouts I suppose... but,.. I still set fine...

I know what your saying phil, about setting them "fine".When i bought a small quantity (genuine talpex), i felt the "pin" was too long on mine, and the "trigger plate" sat too high, and not enough at an angle, which i would have preferred (hope you know what i mean,..lol) but i suspect theres probably a few more 'adjustments' ,that could be tried, with the talpex, to aid the 'capture rate' lol

I dont bother using them at all, anymore,.....i have another alternative,to the half barrel, that does me now,......in fact, i underestimated this particular type of trap,originally,...LOL (but ive surprised myself a bit, with it now !) ha ha

Matt did you get out today and make a start, weather has been shite up here with gales and snow.

Yes, did a couple of hundred acres

I faced snow, hail, thunder, lightening and good old fashioned rain.... but I still went out and had a go

I'm still behind; and the weather for the rest of this week looks shite; but at least I'm covering the ground

It's a romantic life ya know

I've a feeling that the half barrels that Ratbait sell are actually Proctors

I'm happy to be proved wrong; but Proctors would be at the bottom of my 'must buy' list.......

i believe you are correct , on both counts,there,....lol incidentally, i had a word in their ear recently, regarding their barrel traps, told them ,it might be better to stock "british made" ones ? (if possible)

I'm off to Whitby in the morn and have no such worries until Saturday. :bye:

Make sure you get back to the hotel, before dusk,..he he...because i heard "Dracula" is still on the hunt, down those parts ? ha ha ha

Me sea fishing trip is doomed, I'm not going out on the pond with the wind that's showing.so a relaxing couple of days in all the bars looks the only option.

out of interest...can any one tell me who makes and sells traps that are just like the talpex but have a standard scissor trap type trigger? i have used them before but didn't have a clue about the potential of these traps and would now love to get my hands on a few!
