Books And Dvd's

Recommended Posts

I don't think there's been a truly good, rivetting book on trapping yet....I always wanted to find one with plenty of pages and plenty of good colour photos of quarry 'in the act'....so to speak...

Such a manual would be extremely useful,...I'm sure it could be done... :thumbs:

If you want a good read about trapping and adventure, i recommend you try THE CALL OF WILDERNESS , A trappers tale, by Dave vander mere,

I could not put it down once i started to read it , its about trapping in America, it wasn;t written to teach anybody how to trap, just a story of one young mans adventure, definitely worth buying and available on Amazon

I only catch the occasional mole, but I did have a mini-splurge on books, old and new, and dvds, when I first started. In the photo are;

A Fenland Molecatcher by Arthur Randell : What Matt said

The Natural History of Moles by Gorman and Stone : Deals mostly with european moles but also african golden moles and desmans. Plenty of information, tables, statistics, shear forces involved with moles digging actions,etc etc. Interesting, but not a how-to book.

The Mole by Dr. Kenneth Mellanby : Another book built around scientific studies of mole – apparently a young mole's testicles will grow from 200 mg in September to 3000 mg the following February. Also details another researcher attaching radioactive cobalt 60 tail-rings to the moles in order to map their territories underground by following them with a geiger counter...and recounts meeting Arthur Randell and other anecdotes. If I ever have nightmares involving moles, it's the one on the cover of this book that I see...

Le Piegage Traditionnel des Taupes by Jerome Dormion : short french how-to book full of colour pictures, exclusively putange. Worryingly insists that putanges have to be soaked in hydrochloric acid for five days before use to take off the copper coating....and appears to trap exclusively under molehills. To his credit he does warn people of the dangers of moleguns.

( The book looks a bit pamphlet-like but young Monsieur Dormion seems to be Mr Big in the French mole world – he has a heavy web presence, runs courses and commands what he calls a 'network' of 35 molecatchers accredited by himself . If you go to his site

http://www.taupegreen.com/equipe-taupier.htm you'll see his operatives, all in matching jackets...and there are ladies. Also a video clip showing him setting putanges with a french celebrity chef... http://www.taupegreen.com/references-golf-particulier-municipalite-professionnel.htm )

And finally, a book from someone flat-capped whose name is not mentioned on this forum...

I also bought the Moley DVD, and one by an old boy called George Utting called 'Mole Man Professional Molecatcher', which is more of 'a-life-in-the-day ' type of video but a pleasant enough watch.

I don't know enough about moles and molecatching to say how reliable the information from all these books and dvds might be, but I've kept my hydrochloric acid for descaling the bog.

That film about Utting was one of the worst I've ever seen :yes:

He spends the majority of it telling you about all the jobs he's been sacked from! :laugh:

Truly appalling :yes:
