All Set To Wrap Up And Go Home...then.......

Went back out with Mac and the NV rigs last night, met up at 9:30 and after kitting up I walked onto the field to scope up. As I did, I quickly scanned the corner of the field and spotted 4 rabbits about 40 yrd off. I knelt down and fired one off from the hip (ooh err). I hit the rabbit just below the eye an it rolled over. I paced 44 yrds and picked up the first one.

I quickly scoped up and as I was doing so Mac pulled up. After discussing where we were going to lay up, we headed off up the hill. On the brow we scanned the other side of the hill and spotted a good 10 or so rabbits in front of us. Mac was away before I had chance to turn off my tv screen so I let him wander. I scanned the rest of the field and counted 20+ rabbits…..looking good.

I picked a spot far enough away from Mac that we wouldn’t disturb each other and that I had seen rabbits run in. I put out markers at 30-40-50 yrds and lay up. I lay there for 45 mins and the rabbits only came out to my right, a good 60+ yrds away. I watch in case they came closer but nothing. I scanned 90 degrees to my left and saw a rabbit on the hedge row. I figured 40 yrds, took the shot, back flip into the hedge. I walked over and looked for ages but couldn’t find it. It was 42 yrds and I had the crack of pellet on skull but no rabbit for the butcher.

I moved to a different spot but again lay parallel to the hedge, markers at 30-40-50-60. Within 20 mins a rabbit came out but sat at 40 yrds but was hidden by the 30 yrd marker. I waited and he finally stuck his head out and took a H&N FTT behind the eye. I didn’t go pick him up. I have read so many times about leaving the rabbit and waiting….so wait I did.

The rabbits came back out but were running round like nutters, I took a shot at one, but he moved as I pulled the trigger and scattered them all. It was about 1am by now and I was getting cold. I decided I would wait for them one more time, to see if I could get #3 and then call it a night.

Well the crazy lads came back out, running in circles, jumping at each other, generally just being loopy, when one of them ran into the dead rabbit from before. He stopped, sniffed him, then rolled over with a bad head. Now I quickly reloaded the HW100 and the click of the trigger or the click of the reload is normally enough to scatter the rabbits but they just didn’t move! Hello! The one I just shot was twitching one leg when his mate went to see what he was doing and he quickly fell on top of him with a pellet in the noggin. Another reload, still no rabbits running away, a 3rd rabbit then moved over to see what this pile up was, took one sniff and decided to stay away, but he only moved 10 yards and was quickly dispatched. Finally, I spotted another set of eyes just behind the 40 yrd marker. I took aim, click and this one just fell backwards with not a flinch. 4 rabbits in under 1 min. Big fatties too!

I walked over and used the ground sheet Mac sorted out for us as a big sack. I picked up the 4, plus the one I had left earlier and wrapped them up. I got back to the car and just flopped the rabbits in front of Mac. F-in NV, I just can’t do it me. I’m putting me lamp on and going for a walk haha. So while I clean up the 6 rabbits Mac went old school, red lamp and .22 haha. Give him his due, he came back and finished the last rabbit for me and said you’ve had a good night, students done better than the teacher tonight.

I had a great night, the Nitesite Viper is starting to work for me. I can’t stalk with it, but for laying up and giving the bunnies a surprise, I’m well happy with it!

Catch ya next time Mac. Oh, Mr Official photographer, can you post the pic please mate :)
