So Much Choice But There Can Only Be One !

Recommended Posts

hello all :).after shooting shotguns and firearms the last 5 years I've decided to pack it in for a while. Was getting a little to expensive and for too long I haven't been able to go out as much as id like. Only 4 or 5 times the last 6 months ! so soled everything and found myself wanting to get back into air rifle shooting. Looking to spend about 450 to 550 total with a decent scope also I'm looking to buy brand new right out of the box.my preferred calibre is .177.so the 3 rifles I've got it down to are the ..hw 97kt/air arms pro sport/ walther lgv competition. Looking for anyone with experience with these rifles and what you guys think. Just a couple of specific questions...

1.is it true that the cocking lever on the pro sport can be broken easy ? or that the rifle after a while starts to fall apart ? screws and general wear and tear etc.

2.as I wont be looking to do any after market tune up kits should I skip the 97kt ? hear that its a not as good as the other two right out of the box.

3.is there any other top end rifle I should be looking at ? I've had a tx 200 before. The semi recoil one at that ! ..fantastic rifle. But I wont be buying another tx 200.

thanks for your time :) sorry for the essay !

They're all good rifles, mate. If you have a local air rifle club/range near you, wander along and chat to a few people. You may get the chance to try the different rifles, or at least one or two. That's the best way to choose -- try before you buy.

For the record, my 97 was wickedly accurate from the start. I only put a V-Mach kit in it because the original spring broke. Weihrauch FAC springs don't last very long, but you shouldn't have a problem with a 12fpe rifle.

Right Ryan having owned 2 pro sports and the third on its way and apart from the post above iv never heard of the under leaver on the pro sport braking

Pro sport

1,under leaver is made of aluminum and dose feel flimsy

2,and as for falling apart after time, never, nor any other rifle if it dose then your not looking after it full stop

3, one of the best out of the box period,

4, accurate as feck

5, balance is perfect (i think so any way )

hw97

cracking rifles to .

1, yes some are not good from the box and need tuning but most rifles need to have the factory grease taken out any way as often its thick and crap and needs good stuff put in as iv found after a while they start to twang (if new)

2, a tuned 97 is second to none and well worth the effort but you don't have to put a v mach kit in it just a tune and polish will do and next to no recoil and the benefits are seen immediately.

3, a bit weighty but you soon get used to it , and a sling is a must.

4, accurate very very accurate in the right hands , but you can get the same results as others with it just get to no her

this is a hard one as iv own both or have and do lol its a long story both top notch rifles and you will not go wrong with any of them and not much matches them full stop

Me id have the pro, 97 , 97 ,pro

just glad its not me lol

HW97 is an incredible rifle in .177 calibre. That's the only one of the three listed I'd be snapping up! The 97K. I prefer the Bavarian sporter stock. But that's me!

BUT!

If I had to choose just one spring air rifle on the budget stated......And only one. No tuning needed but, fresh out the box, scope up and take it to the hunting field. There is only one underlever for my money.

WEIHRAUCH HW77

I have an HW97K in .177 that is amazingly beautiful to shoot with but, it's no better than my HW77 .22.

My only one regret with my HW77 is that I didn't buy one sooner!

This German rifle beats the lot in my view and experience. I've had a TX200 before and didn't get on with it. Prosport is very nice looking but, has some issues with its underlever I've heard of, but not one of actually breaking in half.

I have yet to hear of any man who bought a '77 and regretted the purchase!

thanks for the feed back guys much appreciated. Will be heading to my local shop tomorrow to have a look at the rifles I've mentioned. And I guess with the pro sport cocking lever being flimsy or somehow getting broken that must be down to either a heavy handed person or just a rare case. Going to leave out the lgv decided its not my cup of tea.

Only posted it to put a fly in the ointment! I know nothing about the Walther but saw a link posted on another forum due to the price.

My first rifle was a HW77 and my last springer was a HW97 so you can guess which I'd choose from your list.

Good luck with your decision.

There's a lad called Mawders here who bought a Prosport and the rifle's underlever developed a creaking and squeaking sound when he cocked it. Couldn't be fixed apparently. Others I have read reported their underlevers as uncomfortably stiff or do not return properly But I have never heard of one actually breaking. Forums being what they are, a few apocraphal myths and stories get out about all manner of otherwise fine quality guns.

I'm left handed and thus, I do not have the pleasure of owning a prosport, otherwse, I would have had two, in .177 and .22.

Certainly, HW rifles all benefit from a tweak and fettle. My HW77 .22 is internally honed and polished to a now almost recoiless perfection, but, it still retains its original Weihrauch components and was a stunner of an accurate rifle when I took it out of the box and went shooting the first day out with it. Fettling has turned it from a great rifle, to a phenominally great rifle!

You're right Simon, after Mawders' bad experience I offered to help with any PS he got his hands on. Eventually he got another from Zini and got it down to me for a bit of TLC. I'm useless at links but if you do a search of "Mawders and Si" you'll probably get the video.

"Mawders and Si at Glevum" brings it up. ;)

Is it this one

Having got two of the rifles you mention, the 97 is robust and just reliable in all ways. The PS is as accurate but somewhat 'more fragile'. The mrs' old man owns a lga. Real nice too...

But I spent yesterday morning with a lgv comp ultra and my god it's good. Like real good. Me and a mate went to a local farm on the ferals and it's his rifle. I took my own longbow but found for various reasons I walked round with his rifle. It is superb. There is no other way to say it. It as accurate as the other two on your short list, smooth as you like, real smooth, smoother than any tx or PS I've shot, including my own. I am currently thinking of doing a PX on some of my rifles for one.

The stock is shit. Ugly perhaps, front end is great, pistol grip is typically Walther, bit 'budget' but overall it is a springer that is there in the high end of performance. Cocking is smooth and refined with a proper good click at the last of the stroke. Trigger is dog, but only with the lads settings, and it hardly compares to the rekord and AA units, but they'll always take some following.

Very very highly recommended.

For complete overall performance, choose one of the other two, but the shooting cycle of the lgv is so good, the other nags are not a concern.
