it aint about being sporting its about pest control, but how is letting tonnes of shot fly at a bird in flight more sporting than a clinical head shot exactly?

Mark, I would agree with most of your post, apart from the far more "skill, and field craft" if you think that being out on a saltmarsh waiting for Teal to drop into decoys on a splash 30 yards in fro

Well the last time I shot Canada geese with a rifle was a .22 hornet, doing 3100fps with a 35 grain v-max bullet, now that is a proper tool for the job I accept a 12ftlbs air rifle would kill them wi

I read this about them on another forum:

This is a fool proof way of cooking Canadas First put the oven on for 20 mins or so @ gas mark 6, then turn the oven up to 7 for 10 mins. Then put the goose in the oven, along with a house brick. Give it 45mins per lb then, throw the goose away and eat the brick." Far tastier".

Crumbs...... a 12 ft lb air rifle would not, in the majority of situations, be considered the appropriate tool for Canada Geese, but it is not per se illegal. As has already been mentioned, there must always be some respect for your quarry, and I can't think of many situations where a 12ft lb V Canada Goose is respectful. Put very simply, if you use a 12 ft lb and injure a Canada you leave yourself wide open to any of the mass of cruelty legislation this country affords wildlife, if you use a more powerful/appropriate tool and simply mess up the shot you don't.

I shoot them all the time for pest control and my chosen tool is rarely even a .22lr, it will sometimes be a HMR but most commonly a .22WMR with V-Max ammo, 300+ ft lb, it isn't overkill, it is efficient, and puts 12ft lb into some perspective.

It is quick, efficient and humane, there is no need to try head shots, giving potential to wound (forget this nonsense, "I always head shoot, that way I kill them or miss completely"), a WMR centre body mass shot virtually wherever you like and they drop.

Few Pest Controllers will use a Shotgun on Canadas.

had two grey lags the other week (shotty mind) on the local airfield, taste nice,

onto the discussion, I would treat them a lot like pheasants, people dispatch them with sub twelve, but like everything you can get a lot of follow through and flight before actually realising they are dead, as for actually being powerful enough to kill, yes they are. But like everything its about how you go about doing it. They can be horrendous over here for the potatoes when the covering looks just like water and they sit on top,

unfortunately they are illegal over here to shoot tho, apart from on the airfield or with a special licence from the environment (note:- im in jersey)

Legalities aside. A sub 12 air rifle would not be my choice. I don't doubt it's capabilities with a well placed shot. I would feel happier shooting something with a little more oomff.

As to a survival situation.....?? I would have bear grylls with an electronic training collar fitted. With a bit of training he would be a useful tool. He could catch it. Pluck it and cook it!!

" go on bear.....fetch!! "

You'd be better of with Ray Mears and a collar as he could whittle you a nice wooden bowl while you're waiting for the food to cook.

As for shooting geese with an airgun, legal, yes, but the wrong tool for the job IMO.

Ed Stafford leaves them both in his wake. Mears is too fat, and Grylls has too much of his merchandise. Stafford is the Macgyver of the survival world.

That's because mears "lives" off the land, the others only survive  I'd take Ray Mears, and live like a lord

I remember some 20 years ago I shot a Comorant with a .22 Brno rifle, much the same in size as a goose, the mate I was shooting with said dont bin it I will take it and cook it!. I had a phone call from him a couple of nights later and he said he had to skin it because he found it allmost impossible to pluck it, so he did that and cooked it but said it tasted fowl (pun intended) he said his house stank of fish and said dont offer me any more to eat!!, I still have a smirk on my face when I remember his moaning. mind you I have'nt shot any more comorants but I used to shoot a few Canadian geese, again with the Brno, allways through the chest.

ILLEGAL to despatch fowl with lead in England ...

In simple terms this only applies to Lead shot...NOT lead.

Single projectile pellets and bullets, which will commonly contain lead are not illegal, something I had to straighten a FEO out on when he told a pal he could not use his HMR on geese because the bullet had lead in it.
