dare 1,103
BUDharley asking how to earn money with aload of land? Smells abit fishy to me might wanna get a carbon filter lol. Jokes aside i wouldn't have a clue but best thing and the old saying is find something you love. Nothing worse than having to do a job you hate regardless of the money. air gun ant 1,666
I'd love to give it a try! But I'd start part time! Don't be giving up a good regular wage just to try it lol
beast 1,884
even if the land is really good, you will really struggle to make a living off it. load it with the right crops (grain, pulses or roots are the best in terms of energy efficiency, and storage. dont bother with greens or fruit) and you could live self sufficiently. and you would be working flat out to work that land on your own. look on it as a way to make a bit of a top up financially, dont expect to make a fortune but you will certainly have great fun, and have a lovely place to mess about with your boy personally, i would go for goats or deer, they will need very little looking after if you keep the stocking levels low

fox digger 1,086
Only way you'd do well off 10 acres is to open a scrappie, breaking cars is a gold mine, all cash! Bit of red tape involved with regulations tho!! I have a few acres aswell but ya wont make a living from a small amount like 10 acres by farming it, unless you get some of them geese that lay them golden eggs!!! Another positive is you have the pond already so its a win win with the geese!!! Lol Atb mate Edited February 18, 2015 by fox digger
mackem 27,470
I got a little bit more than that though the unit size I bought it in is hectares, the lure of the good life soon paled, its hard graft, when you say make a living from the land what sort of monetary figure are you comfortable with each month?
Truther 1,579
Worm farming. You can go on a course at a worm farm not far from me, they show you how to go about it, and even offer to buy as many worms as you can produce, obviously better to find your own market though, and you wouldn't need anything like 10 acres.
Neal 1,873
No experience myself but I'd say one element to consider carefully is whether you're attempting self-sufficiency by producing food for yourself or by selling what you grow/slaughter to provide yourself with an income and getting the balancing act right between those two. A small community near me has recently clubbed together to cover a field with solar panels to feed into the national grid.

Fieldsporthunter 1,864
Live like a king on 10 acres. Ide have 3 chicken coops 100 laying hens in each supply and deliver eggs your self this will give you something coming in every week £140 (approx) register self employed and claim working tax credit another £60 a week 20 langstroth bee hives done properly will produce 100lb+ of honey per hive with experience. Sold to a wholesaler with no messing about will bring you £200 a hive £4000 a year but you will make 50% more if you can find health shops, country stores ect to sell to Get a small holding number 15 sheep will give you an average of 20 lambs a year, £40 profit a lamb. £800 plus sub's for farming the land will bring ya up to £1500. Also you are very unlikely to have many troubles on such small stocking density. There's 15k a year and that's just playing at it. There a lot that can go wrong you need to be able to predict a problem and stop it from happening before the problem ever knew it was going to be a problem. Organisation is key. I could tell you loads more small and little efforts projects that all add up but...... Potential competion and all that, me old man would kill me.
Slippery_Weasel 460
Depends how much you need to live on.. And if you have anything to invest. 10 acres means you can have up to 10000 'free range' chickens but the shed and egg collection machinery cost a fair amount. Can't remember the figures of what you can expect to make as it's been a few years since I looked into it but it wasn't insignificant (for max amount of 16000 birds in one shed on 16 acres If the pond is a reasonable size already look into expanding it?? I've seen those fishing ponds advertised for sale before with the adverts stating 50 odd k a year turnover. I haven't looked into it anymore than that though so don't know what you could expect to take home at the end May be worth looking into a bank of solar panels? Not sure if power companies pay heavily for rental of land or how it works but it may also be partially subsidised by the gov? If your just looking to good life it than 10 acres is plenty
