Hunterhartley 8
It's actually a method I have used for a long time dipping creosalt in pine cones and popping them down rabbit holes, it clears the rabbits in no time but after a while the rabbits do go back . My question is has anyone tried burning creosalt in a way that would create smoke and then trying to smoke them out ? Smoke never really seemed to work with us but I've been making a rat smoker and then I got the idea of experimenting with creosalt smoke , just to see what happens... Being oil based I guess it will set on fire but then I had the idea of mixing it with brake fluid which is much more resilient to high temps .... Any ideas? Anyone tried it... Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
You'd get a better result using a ferret as IMO you could end up getting a face full of creosote smoke (a lot would depend on the wind blowing through the burrow) and let's face it there's smokers out there now for ratting. Whether they'd work on a larger rabbit burrow, I don't know ! I have however used creosote for other jobs and it does work. The best days terrierwork I ever had was as a result of using pine cones soaked in creosote. A friend too used to stink out rabbits using creosote for a fieldtrails and they averaged to 100 rabbits a day until my friend got peppered in the face and that ended that. Quote Link to post

3175darren 1,101
when we did it, it was a way of improving a long netting session, by getting the rabbits out and on top we would do it first thing in the morning, and long net that night, its affect was questionable, as to the degree of benefit it had, often if we had a big set that was hard to ferret, we would do it with a hope of moving them out and into a easier set that was nearby,as for smoking them out with it god knows, large rabbit sets are very complex, and unless you had a method of propelling it through the set,as in a smoker like ratting, I recon you will be sat stinking like a ferrets chuff for a considerable time, before anything bolted. Brilliant, yeah thats what im about to make (Rat Smoker), i have all the parts ready to go just need to put it together. I can but try, ive been messing around with brake fluid with a touch of sun tan oil, its lethal, really thick smoke, that got me thinking introducing creo because i know how much rabbits turn there nose up at it. I have not tried it yet though, will get some creo from the car boot at the weekend. Quote Link to post
Matt 160
I'm still trying to work out what 'creosalt' is?? Quote Link to post
OldTrapCollector 377
I'm still trying to work out what 'creosalt' is?? I think he means creosote Matt, but I doubt he will find it at his car boot - not real coal tar creosote anyway - maybe some of that glorified fence paint which will have minimal 'repellent' qualities compared to the right stuff Quote Link to post
Lid 194
Real creosote can still be bought, eg from here. Quote Link to post
jocky 198
i used it years ago, i used to sock pieces of rag in it then push them down every 3rd hole with a stick, have to leave some holes clear for them to come out, i think it did work to an extent. dont no if the new stuff will work, will give it a try next ferreting season. Yeah its still available, i think the law changed for selling it to the public about ten years ago but it's still available to builders, farmers, etc. Quote Link to post

I remember many, many years ago rolling empty shotgun cartridges filled with the stuff into rabbit buries prior to lamping.... it didn't have much effect then, and I doubt it would have much effect now..... Anyway, creosote is nasty stuff and burns like hell. I don't think I'd personally want to subject rabbits to that, never mind my poor, overworked hands..... Quote Link to post

Matt 160
I'd also question the legality of using a non-approved repellent in a manner for which it's not approved..... Be careful out there lads; there's more than just field sports enthusiasts that read this forum... Quote Link to post
