muttley94 74
Hi all, I was recently recommended, on this forum, the book 'The Rites of Autumn' by Dan O'Brien, Would just like to share this with anyone interested in a great read about Falconry, its only a short book and I managed to pick it up for only a few pounds online! sussex 5,777
Does this give the basics to falconry , or is it more hunting tale type book .? .Anyone recommend a basic book , I'm not looking to start but just want to get an idea of the way you start to train & look after the birds ..thanks . Accip74 7,112
As you're not after anything too specific......Philip Glasier's Falconry & Hawking is historically a classic amongst falconer's & will give you the general idea, as a book it's a bit 'stuffy' & old school & kinda gives the impression that if you're not retired, wealthy or maybe unemployed with access to huge tracts of land, then falconry probably isn't for you haha.....but still an essential read IMO..... Beware of some of the basic 'how to' books, they make pretty dull reading. I would still recommend 'The Rites of Autumn' as it perfectly illustrates the passion & length some of us are willing to go to 'serve' our birds.....& really well written. muttley94 74
I did the same sussex and you wont regret it! i think i read it in two sittings! you just wont want to put it down! Ive also just finished reading The Complete Rabbit and Hare Hawk by Martin hollinshead which is good when covering the basics, but it is, as the title suggests, more focused on purely hawking rabbits and hares rather than any wider aspects of the sport, still another book I found enjoyable and informative to read!
