What To Buy .177 Or .22??

Recommended Posts

What do you want to do with it? Hunt? Get what works for you (.22 or .177).

Targets? .177

People here, including me, have our preferences, but our preferences may not be right for you. Calibre debates are pointless in a hunting context, as both can do the job equally well.

Hi Matty, good post.

I am a "reformed" calibre air gunner from 22 for 40 years to 177 for 3 years and i own two HW 100`s one in .22 and one in .177, both, i`m sure most will agree, are "top, top, quality" rifles.

The .177 is "never out of my hands", the .22 is constantly in the gun cabinets. So "why" ?

Two spots only rule - heart / lungs and head shot - the shot placement (trajectory) of the 177 from a HW 100 is so precise it never fails to hit the money, period , and whatever calibre hits that money it is dead !

The .22 calibre is every bit as accurate as .177 on "OPEN ground" - through woodland, trees, branches, twigs you cannot "thread" a pellet in .22 through the canopy like you can with the .177 calibre.

Now then lads - please don`t hang me for the next statement - if my shot is slightly off target the power of .22 hitting near the point of aim "compensates my in accuracy" - the lethal accuracy of .177 "always hitting the point of aim" is the reason my game bags have increased considerably this last three years.

"The calibre question (for me) is an absolute no brainer at 12 ft?lbs.
